OK guys I'm brand new to this .I have never gotten into home theater but I am getting a new apartment and am broke as a joke..... I was told about Chromecast and such things as my new apt will come with WiFi ... From my landlord who lives upstairs.... But no cable...

If I could get away with not buying cable I would love it so I started looking into htpcs. But I don't even know where to start...

Will the signal from upstairs be strong enough for me to use to watch movies and shows, will there be a ton of lag? what equipment would I need?

I wouldn't be opposed to building it myself at all I just want to learn more and cover all the bases before I start. ...

If anyone would help I'd appreciate it a lot

Hey gotgrowth...
Streaming via WiFi isn't ideal...but can be done. Your downfall here, will be the fact that he is providing your sole internet connection. There is no telling what else is goin on over his network.
He will control your bandwidth, and possibly your connection times=bad...
Your connection will be subject to whatever he is downloading/streaming/uploading=bad

Also, it is his network, so connecting your stuff to it, will open you, and your sensitive info, to his eyes and ears. There are ways around that, and I'm not saying that this may be the type of person that does this sort of thing...just making you aware.
Good luck. Let us know how it goes.

Ideally it would be great if he could provide you with a wired connection, see if that is an option. Depending on the building's setup running a CAT5 cable can be easy or hard. If you go with Netflix or Hulu the faster connection the better, If you use something like Playon based on your computer and feed it to a Roku box you can use the free Hulu. I'm not a fan of Hulu due to the non skippable commercials, but you may not mind them - the price is right.

A HTPC would be able to cover all of your streaming needs, but they're complicated and expensive to get started with.  A Chromecast is very easy and cheap, especially with Netflix, Hulu Plus, etc. but streaming local media is a bit tougher.  For that you have to install some media server (such as Plex) on the PC that contains the files you want to stream, download the Plex app on your smartphone ($4.99), and "cast" it to the Chromecast.

If you're looking into building a HTPC, it doesn't need to be top-of-the-line, but it does need some horsepower if you're going to transcode HD.

There are a lot of other options as well, such as the Roku, Amazon Fire TV, smart blu-ray players, etc that can stream and have a decent UI for a lot cheaper.  I'm not sure what your budget is, or exactly what you're wanting to stream, but there are MANY options out there for you.

Thanks cyber.... Im trying to keep monthly fees at or around zero and I currently do not have a computer to run anything off of so I figured going htpc..... To kill two birds with one stone. I might get my own WiFi in my apt so there is no worries but cable is out of the question.. I want to try and get live the for free of possible ...... I could also get a cheaper laptop and Chromecast or something. Butbibdont want junk.... Budget will have to be under 600,or so for everything needed.....
I really could use your help guys

Where do you live? OTA TV is an option in many places. If you opt for a computer for your uses, it does not need to be top of the line, a good basic even used computer will do. You can add a TV tuner card and have a drv - with OTA.

Chromecast is fine but it depends on your cellphone a lot. My favorite media streamer is the WD SMP. Can be had on ebay for $50 or so, can accept a OTA tuner, will work with netflix and hulu and many others and is ready to stream content from your computer if you ever go that route. It also will work with wifi.

It sounds like you want your bill to be very low so I would just stick to the basics and see how things work with the provided wifi. Connect to it with your cell and run a speed test to see what kind of speed you will be getting. 3Meg is about the least that will work with streaming services like netflix. They want 6Meg for HD and more is obviously better. If you stream a lot be aware some, many companies have data caps and your landlord might get a surprise in his bill if your combined usage is over the cap. If you shop for your own internet service be aware that many plans offer low introductory pricing and jump way up after 6 months. Be prepared to play the switching game every year to keep your costs down.

Good luck!

If you plug your zip into tvfool.com you will find you have a massive amount of stations available to you.

http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=29&q=id%3de1c6d6eb46dc4b

If you input your actual address and info it will give better results, but reception can be tricky in big cities. An outside antenna would serve you best, but if that is not an option you will have to do some research to find one that works in your area. There is a local reception section on this site, you might want to post over there.
