An update on the drop-out issue: A console window revealed airplay having to re-transmit a LOT. I live in a pretty crowded RF neighborhood, so it isn't completely surprising. The connection would drop off once the retransmit count exceeded 1000 on any given track. Netspot revealed my neighbor's wireless signal would sometimes be stronger than mine, and it was on the same channel. Because my router was supplied by Verizon, I had limited configuration options available to me.
My existing wireless router is on the ground floor, one floor below the Mac I use for streaming. I bought another router and put it in the entertainment center, with line-of-sight to the Mac. After a week, there have been no more issues with lost connections. Retransmits usually don't exceed 200. I do get the occasional drop-out, but it's not much more than the occasional "click." Last night something happened and the retransmit count jumped way beyond *5000* but Tidal never "lost lock."
I can't say how applicable my experience is for the wider audience, but it is a datapoint. Me, I think perhaps Tidal's compression algorithms might need work, or maybe it's a quirk of Airplay. But that's just my speculation.
