This might be a little long. I've been having this problem for quite a while. I've posted many times on the mede8er forum, going back and forth. But they never seem to offer any concrete suggestions or solutions. I'm currently at my wits end with this. I've tried so many different things that i can think of or find on the internet, to no avail.
I have win 7 home premium and a mede8er 1000x3d. They are both hooked up to my home network via asus router.
Here's the problem in a nutshell. When i try to get to my files on my desktop from the mede8er i get a logon failed error. The frustrating thing is that it is intermittent. I can fix it by restarting BOTH the desktop AND the Med, and then it will work for a while. But then after a while, i'll try to play a file and it will give me a logon error. Sometimes i get the error right off the bat when i turn on the med and try to play a file.
It always works after I reboot the computer AND mede8er. So it's definitely something that's happening after everything is on for a while...like something gets disconnected after a while.
I can usually see the workgroup and see the desktop on the med. But when i try to enter the desktop, it gives me the "logon failed".
The weird thing is that i can access and play video files of my wireless laptop (which is also in the same workgroup) without fail. It's just a random problem on the desktop. I can't figure out the difference that would be causing the problem. Today something different happened for the first time (since the problem started several months ago)...the med couldn't even see the workgroup. I happened to have a direct shortcut to the laptop, and that worked fine.
The moderator at the med forum keeps saying it's symptoms of a dns failure...but he never offers any kind of suggestion to fix it.

Here are some notes and things that I've already tried...
-Changing from dhcp auto ip to a static ip.
-Various reg fixes and ntwrk card settings adjustments suggested from other websites.
-Recreating a new account on my desktop for the mede8er to logon with. The mede8er requires you to log onto your p.c. with a username and password...check.
-Switching out ethernet cables to see if one could possibly be bad.
-Haneswin NFS program...though i'm not sure if i set that up right...the settings were very daunting.
-upnp works fine, but don't want to use that.
-I bit the bullet and bought a dune base 3d. It works fine. But it is vastly inferior to the mede8er. It's slow as anything (at least 3x as slow booting up). Have to hit refresh several times before workgroup shows up, then another several refreshes to see my desktop.
-The dune couldn't find any files on my desktop until i uninstalled windows live...what a weird fix. But this didn't fix the mede8er...apparently they already fixed that via firmware a long while back.
-Made sure that the folders are shared with "everyone"...like i said, dune works fine.
-Tried openwrt open source firmware on netgear router.
-Bought new asus router.
-I'm probably forgetting a few things...i'll post again if i can think of any other information that could help somebody help.
I desperately ask for your help.
Thanks!
