I was under the impression from previous conversations that it isn't a good idea to use the 16GB version of the Shield as a Plex server due to the server software only being able to use internal memory to store the metadata. That 16GB would be used up pretty quickly if you have a large media collection.

I left it on recommended settings of 4K 59.94 and ycbcr 420 10 bit 2020, and PQ is great on my Sony X940E. Works about as fluid on those apps as my X800, and I get HDR Amazon! HDR Netflix checked out OK too.
Just so I understand, this is the same 5.2 that we all got a few months ago right? Just want to make sure I'm not missing out

Works for me although I prefer Kodi to Plex as a media server. I've tried it both on the internal HD and a USB, no problem with either.

Kodi isn't a media server. It is a player.

They both have Player components and Kodi can play HDR and other high bitrate high frame rate formats that Plex can't.
Additionally, Kodi has the ability to run off shared storage and can be configured as SMB. If you are somewhat technical it's better all in all to serve content that Plex can't. That said, I agree Plex is, out of the box, easier to get up and running.
Also, I misread the point about the 16G version. Mine is 500G with extra storage so my experience is different.

Yes, but it isn't a media server. Plex Server is set up and you point the Plex clients (or Kodi) to it. All metadata is as it exists on the server. With Kodi you have to set up each instance to point to your libraries. Plex client and Kodi are players unless you hack together what was mentioned above. There is no Kodi Server.

With the right display and HDMI cables, does the Shield *reliably* play back Netflix and Amazon in 4K HDR?

Thanks!
Your friend told you the right thing. Netflix on the Shield don't support 4K resolution at 24Hz for either HDR Ultra HD or SDR Ultra HD.

If you set your Shield to 4K/24Hz it shrinks from Ultra HD to 1080p and doesn't go further. This is a known bug since the first nougat update.
Amazon HDR and SDR Ultra HD works at 4K/24Hz. About Vudu I can't tell you any.

Anyone in Canada that can tell me if Crave TV and TMNGo work on the Shield? I am on the fence about ordering one to replace my Roku for a PlexClient and Netflix.
Thanks

4k and 24hz works on mine for netflix. A while back someone said it wasn't working so I switched the shield to 24hz, loaded up netflix and started a movie playing, brought up the info screen and there it was 4k. If I come back to it another time then 4k won't work and I have to reboot to get it back again.

Though I tend to not leave it at 24hz as I don't see any difference.

Reboot the Shield, change it to 4K/23.976Hz 12-bit YCbCr 4:2:2 Rec.2020 before launching Netflix for the first time, then all Ultra HD logos are gone and the streaming resolution will be limited to 1080p. It's another problem that the Netflix app somehow remembers the refresh rate when it's first launched, therefor a reboot is needed to properly test this. A force close of Netflix might help aswell.

After a couple of days use on different content, I'm happy with the Shield set on the "recommended" settings for video with my 940E, just going to leave it alone. When I fire it up at night after work to watch content, I just want to click a couple of buttons and relax.

I can see a slight difference in motion vs the X800 Sony, but its fine, and the PQ is good on the 75".

Some tvs can't do a judder free 60hz and that's where the benefit is. Your tv may be fine or you just don't notice.

Does anybody use the Showtime app on Shield (rather than the Showtime channel thru the Amazon Instant Video app)? If so, does it stream with DD 5.1?

I so got my new shield and installed Kodi Krypton 17.4 from the Play Store. Tried for 2 days now,set it up with my Freenas movies and Kodi Shield cannot connect to The Movie Database server. I am really frustrated. Anybody else has a solution? With Kodi 17.3 with the Sony 940 E Kodi had no problem.

Yeah, I don't use Plex but I generally go into play, see if there are updates, and then reboot before using. I downloaded the Plex update.

I'm sure someone has mentioned this before, but the official Plex add-on in Kodi (specifically SPMC for me) has been the answer to my Plex wishes. For starters the GUI is much better than the official Plex app on the shield (my preference of course).

It uses Kodi's player, which is superior in my opinion.

-direct play
-hvec x265 4k playback
-23.976fps
-2160p GUI (specific to SPMC)
-better 4k scaling using Lanczos3 - optimised (SPMC specific)
-audio delay
-HD audio including Atmos

Just thought I'd share my experience since it hits all the marks I was looking for in a Plex client.

I have both SPMC and Kodi. Dumb question - why do you prefer the 23.976 fps for example instead of higher frame rates and Hz? I don't have a Plexpass so I had to use the PlexConnect addon and I didn't really like it. I assume you're using the regular Plex addon for Kodi/SPMC with a Plexpass right?

I do have a plex pass, but I believe it?s now available for free as well (minus a few features). I tried plexkodiconnect as well and didnt like it either. As for 24fps, it?s just a preference I prefer, but at least it?s an option (unlike on the Roku, Xbox, Appletv, etc..

They're for "local media".

I rip my Blu Ray collection (losslessly). On Shield, Plex and Kodi (and SPMC) play those files back, and they look (and sound; shield can bitstream the lossless audio track that is included in Blu Rays and nowhere to be found on Netflix/Amazon/Vudu etc) like I have to the disc inserted into my Player. Point-n-click. No getting up off the couch. No menus.

I DVR favorite shows/series/sporting events, edit them for commercials, and play them back this way as well.

I also rip my CD collection losslessly (.flac). Plex supports Google Cast, so it works great with Shield, and integrates well with my whole home audio setup of CCAs.

If you don't do any of those things, you probably have no use for Plex/Kodi...

How do you rip a Blu-ray collection and how big are the files on average?

I use MakeMKV. Uncompressed, the files tend to range from 20 - 30 Gigs each.
