Here are the hex codes. Menu button is Home button. currently only Menu/Home, navigation, play, stop, FF, Rew, and volume codes work. Other commands do not work yet.

Shield replace WDTV and ATV3

Finally a STB can replace both of my WDTV and ATV3.

My WDTV recently ran out of memory and require restart. ATV 3 has no update for 3 years. Nvidia Shield is a device that I have been wishing to have for a long time. For Youtube, Netflix, Kodi, Foxnews/CNN, it is perfect. UI is simple and fast. I use either logigech bluetooth keyboard or URC MX-880 to control it, adding Flirc USB for more commands in addition to built-in IR. excitingly new Android M coming in Sep/Oct will add external storage support and bluetooth headphone.

Thanks for the discrete codes link.

What device(s) or remote(s) are you using in conjunction with the Flirc USB?

I have a URC MX-980 and like to use it as much as possible. Also use a Samsung Tab 4 (various apps) for some things but prefer my button remotes .

Same here. I don't like many remotes nor touch remote. I like to use one remote with physical button for every devices.

you can use any remotes with Flirc. It has a PC program to map any IR commands to any keyboard keys (pick remote IR for a device that you don't have). I am using WDTV remote with Flirc since I don't use WDTV anymore. I don't physically use WDTV remote. I use WDTV hex codes on my MX-880. In other words, I use only one remote mx-880 to control every devices, including Shield.

from URC program Command Center, you can load any remote from the IR database onto your mx-980. then use Flirc program to map to keyboard keys. for example, you can map WDTV OK button to keyboard enter key (combo of keys: ctrl and h).

To launch global search using on-screen keyboard, map keyboard window key (see below) to one of remote IR command, then use MX-980 macro to include this command and right navigation key. This is the same as pressing search button on Shield remote and then pressing right navigation button to start searching using on-screen keyboard.

Run this command from window console cmd to map to window key: flirc_util.exe record_api 8 0
if you install flirc under C:\Program Files (x86)\Flirc, then make sure you are in this dir before running the command above.

I really like the Shield Tv. It has replaced everything except for the Roku when I am running Sling tv. There is a 2.6 mbps bandwidth cap with Sling on the STV which makes no sense to me at all. I get a very solid 4.7 on the Roku. I contacted support and he admitted he had no clue but would open a ticket..lol Anyway, I love the Live Channels app with my hdhomerun and Pluto tv and Kodi is great too. I have been waiting for a single box that could do the majority of what I want to do and this along with my Oppo 103 fits the bill nicely.

Does it plays 3D MVC ISO Blu-Ray rips ? I am really interested in this new piece of hardware so It can replace my WDTV and my Minix Neo X8-H Plus. I dont care for HD AUDIO since I play my movies through my Samsung TV speakers.

Nope. Options for full 3D here, and I'll be adding another soon: Rockchip 3368-based players (HiMedia H8, Zidoo X6). With Shield TV, 3D has been requested, but we're more likely to get HD audio and 23.976 support than 3D.

Thanks Brajesh ! But the chart is not clear about the VidOn version of Kodi that is available to Minix. Does the Minix X8H- PLUS can play 3D MVC BD ISO in KODI with the VidOn Kodi apk ? Because I installed it and try to load 3D BD ISO files and they were not displayed in 3D !!!! Even if I select 3D in the setting/VidOn section

Sorry, I'm not familiar as I don't have a X8-H Plus. I assume you've tried the Minix forum?

Finally I was able to use 3D MVC with all my 3D BD ISO's in KODI. The only thing thing is that the 3D is doing some nasty flickers now ! The KODI apk for Minix is in beta stage so I can understand that the 3D will not be 100 % working from day one. At least it's a move in the right direction. The X8H-Plus is a truly great android box but if they can manage to perform 100 % working 3D MVC and 7.1 HD audio ( they are working on this one too, 5.1 HD sound is available with the VidOn KODI apk ) it will be the player to beat.

But the NVidia Shield has some great features that I will like to have ( 4K NETFLIX, 4K ULTRAFLIX, great WI-FI )

Hey guys,

I have a Sony 4K projector with a Denon X5200W Receiver and the NVidia Shield Player. I also have a plan on Netflix which plays 4K shows. The problem is playing through the NVidia Shield and the Denon and the Sony Projector, Netflix only shows as 1080P HD. However if I play the same stream on my other Sony 4K Television without any receiver and direct to TV, it shows as Ultra 4K stream.

Any ideas on any settings for the Nvidia/Denon and Sony 4K projector combo?

Thanks

The Denon site shows your device as not being HDCP 2.2 as seen here. For Netflix UHD streams it appears to require devices be HDMI 2.0, HDCP 2.2

I have a Sony FMP-X10 and Sony VW600, they work fine with Netflix UHD streams. I have the X10 connected directly to HDMI #2 . On the VW600, ONLY HDMI Input Number 2 is HDMI 2.0, HDCP 2.2 compliant.

If you need to switch between HDMI 2.0, HDCP 2.2 source devices then you may want to consider this device here. A
FMP-X10 user has a X10, Shield and another device and says the switcher works for him.

I also have the X10 and the same disappointment as many others that there is no Amazon 4K app. Been looking at the Nvidia Shield but then again it doesn't have the Amazon app . If the Nvidia ends up with the app I might buy one and would need the switch that you linked to to switch between the two devices as my 65X900A only has one 4K compliant input. Until then I won't buy anything that does not already have everything I want (after getting burned by Sony)!

Is the Shield capable of outputting 1080i? I'm looking for a device that I can use for Sling TV with my 1080i TV until I upgrade to a 4K TV in that room. The TV will accept 720p, but downscales it to standard def (and does a terrible job of it at that).

For those using the Shield with Kodi I wanted to know

1) Does it play dvd and blu ray isos?(main movie don't need menu support)
2) Recognize and play forced subtitles in mkv files(iso as well)
3) Will it downmix/decode all Hd audio(i dont use a receiver just tv speakers)

Looking for something to play my local media files(blu ray and dvd rips iso and mks mixture) its either going to be a shield or Intel NUC(Skylake)

Im going to assume the picture quality on playing local media is good. is this a good enough replace for a Dune Smart player?

Anyone notice frame drops or jerkiness when playing Netflix? I noticed it particularly on the movie "The Suicide Theory" but it played smoothly on my BD Player. Both are connected via Ethernet so it's not a wifi problem.

VideoLan (VLC) is now available. It should handle files that the built-in or Gallery player won't.
The interface has been reworked for console.

Yes. Basically, every 5-20 seconds, you see it skip a few frames (jerky for half a second). Googling around I found a "fix." If you go the the Google Play app and search for Netflix and uninstall it, the box is left with the stock Netflix app. When you run it (you have to re-login), the frame-skipping jerkiness seems to be gone. So basically the latest version of Netflix on this device is introducing this issue. Also, you have to go to Settings and turn off Auto Updates for Apps - otherwise you are back to the new version when you reboot next, with the issue back as well.

This makes it more difficult for me now since I was considering the new Fire TV. Only downside with this is there is no Amazon Prime 4K app for it yet, but this seems more future proof.

Yeah, it sucks that is has to be a choice. The Shield TV is approaching ultimate streamer status yet the omission of HBO Go/Now and Amazon really impact it. I am fortunate as I can do Amazon Video UHD on my TV so it is less of an issue, but HBO is a problem for both.

HBO Go seems to be a non-issue to me since you can simply cast to it.

Just set up a Shield today. It is an awesome piece of gear. I was looking for something that streamed Google Play Music and 4K content. I was considering the Nexus Player but this is just a much better device. If I were a gamer this would REALLY be a no-brainer. I'm actually tempted to start....
