I can't recall reading about a certain version of f/w on one of the Dune units taking away ISO playback capability.

You may be thinking of the Oppo 93 (which I also own), where ISO playback was taken away. I keep my 93 on the old f/w for this very reason.

I also have an Oppo 103D running "rogue" f/w, which allows 2D and 3D ISO support with full menus, and allows it over the network (which the 93 can't do).

Do you notice any PQ difference between the Oppo and the Dune (excluding the Darbee)?

Hard to say definitively (my Oppo is upstairs in my theater connected to a calibrated Epson 5020 projector, with darbee on, and my Dunes are connected to random TVs around the house), but based on stuff I've read (and watching various things in my home), I would probably wager that the Oppo is producing better PQ. But again, this is all subjective.

Jukebox options my guess would be the normal the users mention but I have strong feeling that this would either have a front end kodi gui with scrapper/coverart as per one of there demo on older unit.

That demo you are speaking of that they showed was a non functioning demo. You are taking a big if. Remember for kodi to work on the sigma chipset SIGMA has to release the information to KODI to hook into the sigma playback engine. I dont see this happening as it has never happened before and they are even more closed off now then they were. The only possible way is if SIGMA has an android software player they have built that kodi can use as an external player.

That's what I meant with the dual boot Android and Linux selling point both of which have kodi available for them.

Thanks

All sigma players have been linux and even a random android one a few years ago why do you think KODI has not ran on one of them? Sigma does not give the tools to link with KODI. This is why everyone was so excited with the announcement of the sigma/xbmc partnership in 2011 that never materialized. There is nothing new or different with this chipset that would make KODI magically work with it unless the fruits of that partnership start to show something.

The way sigma runs everything in a framework on the linux side does not allow for external applications to even access the display unless you kill framebuffer and restart it but then you are sending things to the display at the slowest possible rate. On the android side of it the last player that let it go into android you could boot into android and that was it none of the video/audio decoders were available to android software there was a demo play but you could not add anything to it. I dont want anyone to get there hopes up thinking a miracle might happen. If it does it would be a win win for everyone but the reality is highly unlikely. Then you have the speed of the SoC You are talking a dual core arm9. That is slower then the original raspi that could only run basic kodi skins.

I have not see anything about a Booth they usually partner with someone but I am not finding much booths for media players. Seems even sigma is not doing a booth but a hotel room.

Good to see you're still posting dbone , or maybe I've been hanging out at Kodi forum far more these days. Honestly, at this point, think it's time to look past Sigma or Realtek solutions or anything that doesn't support 3D, HD audio, etc. via Kodi.

I'm a big fan of HiMedia Q5/Q10 and they have their Q5/Q10 Pro due in early April w/the new HiSilicon Hi3798C V200 SoC. The current-gen chip already produces a fantastic picture, so I'd expect new to be as good, maybe better. Also, continued full 3D ISO support & HD audio passthru w/10bit 4K & 60fps, dual Gigabit LAN, 192/24bit audio, and HDMI 2.0. And of course Kodi as the front-end.

The Dune, Cloud Media offerings feel dated. Just my 2 cents.

No forced subtitles on the q5. and strange you mention fantastic picture when I read it suffers from chroma clipping and R/G/B clipping. And didn't it suffer HD audio drops up until a few months ago. You cant adjust subtitle timing without the show becoming un-watchable. I think your eyes have been blinded by the kodi UI. Only thing that matters to me is it plays 98% of the time without having to change anything. All the above are marks against it.

@halfelite , yes, lack of forced subs support is an issue on Q5/Q10. Pick your poison dude . I'd rather have Kodi as my front end. Also, I save all my 3D ISO's as movie-only ISO's (thanks to AnyDVDHD & tsMuxeR) & my 2D's as movie-only MKV's via MakeMKV... both w/just the forced subs only muxed in.

Re: chroma clipping and R/G/B clipping, maybe I'm blissfully unaware, but PQ looks fantastic to me (Epson 5025UB PJ w/130" Da-lite HP screen), whether 2D or 3D BD rips. Pretty darn close to Oppo-quality w/Darbee effect thrown in. As for subs, I know some have said only PCH A-4xx & VTEN support them properly, but whether I'm watching 'Avatar' 3D w/Na'vi speak or 'The Taking of Tiger Mountain' 3D w/English subs throughout, I can read the subs, and they aren't blocked-out in some odd 3D-plane.

HiMedia Q5/Q10 aren't perfect; I've outlined shortcomings here... but, they're the best option w/Kodi + 3D + HD audio. I tried out VTEN recently, and while video playback is indeed excellent, it's clunky, w/dated jukebox, poor connected apps, and overall slow UI.

Unit on the way.

I received a call from Mike over at Duneplayer.com early this afternoon (1:00 PM EST on January 28, 2016). He is sending me a Dune 4K Solo unit for testing and evaluation early next week. We spoke in detail about what the unit does and doesn’t do and what I can expect from the player on first go around. I have had several conversations with Mike over the years about what should be included to make this the go to player. He requested my input on the performance and feature set of the unit and requested that I back up his findings before a formal announcement is made of what we can expect once the product is released. His initial testing proved very positive and addresses the concerns that many diehards voiced in the last several years concerning playback feature set and performance. I will test network performance, ISO Full Menu, 3D ISO Full Menu, HD Audio Bit streaming, forced subs, MKV playback and everything else that is required and expected for this player to be a true 4K successor to the Smart Series. I was told it works with My Movies as well as Zappiti. It does not support Kodi at this time.
This is all I know at this time. As soon I get the unit I will test and report my findings.

I never stopped. I never deviated from the method that I have been using since I purchased my first Dune six years ago. All my stuff are ISOs and all my players are still Dunes. I hope this player lives up to the expectations. HDI has quite a pedigree when dealing with media players and am hopeful it is a worthy successor. I have championed Dunes as the go to players since day one. I hope this one does not let me down. Really excited to run it through its paces.

IF this can dual boot linux and android, why couldn't you load Kodi on Android?

Thanks for the info blackssr. When you get it can you please also see if it will decode/downmix HD audio (Dolby, DtS etc etc)for those who don't have audio receivers please? Also will the Solo work with the newer versions of Zappiti? For us Dune smart owners we can't use anything above version 2.8.15
Looks like the MSRP is $349 according to the Dune website

the new version of zappiti is only for their new players running android. If dune is keeping their linux based OS, you will still have to use the 2.8.15 or any other jukebox compatible with older dune players.

As I already said, I'm extremely curious about the full BR menu support and have absolutely no idea how the did achieve that (if true...)

Can't wait for the feedback.

The mede8er 1000x3d is very good player for 3d play back inc 3d subtitles.

The q5 has good picture but has limited 4k playback some content which played fine in the nvidia shield.
