I never really looked at it that way before, I thought they were really focusing on the VR aspect of things.

In the press release, Sony stated the four free movies would be available for those purchasing sets this summer. Summer starts in June. Most likely, those with sets already will not be eligible for the promotion.

You are correct. Improved virtual reality performance is the main motivation behind an updated PS4 console. 4K media capabilities are a secondary factor, but it seems like a no-brainer to include them. Hopefully, Sony will choose to support Ultra HD Blu-Ray playback rather than just 4K streaming apps.

Yes, Apple tried to do this years ago with iTunes and other hardware. And what happened, they had to make it compatible with other devices because they knew they were going to lose out... Sony better wake up..

Actually only $12.00 for us Sony guys if we already own the UV copy

Look great to me, finally a decent start for Streaming 4K

I do wonder if Sony might put this app out on Blu-Ray players etc also in the future. Also for us Android hackers I would think we could get this app to work on other Android based boxes with little work. I been out of the development game for awhile but I bet it is possible.

I have Chappie, Elysium, Amazing Spiderman 2, Total Recall, Mad Max so far

I just linked Sonystore account to UV account and then chose the movie and it gave me option to upgrade to 4K for 12.00.

They will support UHD BD. That's a no-brainer. Lets not forget that the PS3 is largely responsible for the early adoption of Blu Ray over HD-DVD. I'm sure the companies involved in the Blu Ray Disc Association want Sony and Microsoft to create consoles with UHD BD. Trojan horse.

Stand tall and shake the heavens...

Well I extracted the Ultra apk from the Sony TV, got it installed on my FireTV working out kinks now. I can see all my movies, sign into account, select movie but right now I get error trying to play.

This could be good news for some that want this apk on other Android devices. I will keep digging.

This strange, because I have a huge UV library and the only prices I'm seeing for upgrades are $30.

DOA. $30 to stream a movie without Atmos? Where is the market for that?

If you purchased the Sony UHD, why in the world would you want to stream the same inferior content for a discounted price?

Does anybody have a business degree at Sony?

Not the Samsung, but you can get a FireTV stick pretty cheap. I am working on getting it to work with it. No promises but hopefully it will work out.

You can just own the regular BR version and upgrade it for 12.00 to uhd. Now that's allot cheaper here were I got my degree.

Well - - buying a UHD disc certainly makes more sense than streaming without Atmos at $30 bucks a pop.

I guess I just don't understand the pricing strategy for a new technology IF you are looking to gain mass adoption.

Say you streamed 5 moves a month at $30.00 each. You wouldn't be able to pay for college but you could probably pay your lease payment for a smaller car!

I have a sony 850C, and this app snuck up on me. I have been patiently waiting for Vudu to give me UHD content on my tv, but their support has been pretty terrible. I don't see myself buying much off this sony app, but would gladly watch if I got 4 free movies, or could pay $12 for a couple of them. I don't have an atmos setup, so the sound doesn't bother me. I have a hard time getting into streaming UHD, only because I hate relying on consistent bandwidth to enjoy a full movie. I wish these companies would consider the lack of bandwidth and utilize an external storage device and download ahead of time to it so if net speeds are down, the movie doesn't cut out. I know that most people in my area have internet speeds <= 20mbps range on average. This isn't enough to rely on for UHD streaming and is making me think that UHD blu rays are going to become a pretty big deal. I don't see the advantage of a highly compressed UHD video over a good blu ray disc yet. My tv makes blu rays look amazing, and even makes streamed 1080 content look better than it did before. However, when watching a streamed 4k video vs. a blu ray disc that is upconverted, it is hardly noticeable. I think that the consumers that are going to really push for that extra level of clarity are going to want it ALL. I am talking HDR, or Dobly Vision, along with Atmos. This market is small, and consists of 75% of the members of this site. The general public will be content with the placebo effect they are getting by knowing they are watching a 4k tv in their home. One instantly "thinks" that picture is much better, when a good 1080 tv will produce a quality very close to what is seen on entry level 4k sets that the general public will buy. I am, for the most part just like the general public. I don't have Atmos (yet) so the sound isn't an issue. I am interested in getting into UHD blu rays once it is around more and has some other players. Until then, I may entertain some streaming here and there. This just doesn't seem like the service that is pulling me in.

I have over 1000 UltraViolet movies. Some are from redeeming Blu-Ray codes. Some are direct purchases from Vudu and other providers. It shouldn't matter. A UV license is a UV license. I am not seeing sub $30 pricing on anything.

It is a question of an SD UV license vs an HD UV license. This is no longer directly connected to a physical disc format.

How do you figure out which titles? The interface is absolutely terrible and some things just won't load at all. It also crashes a lot.

It has not crashed on me not one single time. I am not sure what's going on with your interface. I just choose a title and it gives me the option.

I think I'm going to do a full reboot and see what happens. My set is an XBR75X940C.
