Best streaming player for 4k and Atmos

Guys,
Looked through the forum and pretty much lost...
I currently have an Xbox one S and smart apps like Vudu and Fandago dont support dolby Atmos support.
What is the best device on the market to be able to use Vudu and Fandago etc. for Atmos and 4k support?
Its unfortunate that the Samsung TV cant output Atmos to my receiver through ARC or Optical ..

Another vote for the Shield. I also tried the Roku Ultra and it was more trouble than it was worth.

When comparing the picture and audio quality of the Roku Ultra and the 2nd gen Shield, were they indistinguishable? Which of the two best handles 4k Netflix and Amazon at 24hz?

I will be getting the Shield. Owned the Roku Ultra for about an hour and a half before deciding to return it. It's really a shame with the Roku, have had the Roku three for years and it's been great.

Why did you return the Roku Ultra?

The new Roku's are known to have issues with audio chirps, audio dropouts, and system freezes. I experienced all of them within a couple of hours.

I had them both (but not at the same time). Can't say I really noticed a difference in picture quality. Both handled Netflix/Amazon 4k/HDR fine. But the Roku was flakier than the Shield. It needed to be rebooted often (for example, to get Netflix 4k/HDR to work) and I could never get Vudu to work properly.

The Shield is not without its quirks as well (sometimes the display only shows 1/4 size, but that seems to resolve itself. Also, the order in which it displays the recently-used apps seems pretty random) but in general it seems to work much better than the Roku.

For local files, it's no contest in favor of the Shield.

I faced this dilemma recently, but was informed that with a FLIRC IR Receiver, the 2nd gen 16 gig Shield works perfectly with Control4. The Pro has the IR receiver built in.

Does the Shield support any service that rents new releases in HDR UHD? For example, Vudu?

Don't suffer through Gamma D on your JVC. Optimize HDR Tone Mapping using Arve's tool instead.

Another vote for the Shield running SPMC. Bit streaming Atmos and DTS-X without problems so far.
It can be set to be very appliance like: autoboot into SPMC, running Amazon Video and Netflix straight
from SPMC main menu. After Amazon Video, or Netflix exits, it returns to SPMC.

I have the new Sony xe93 ANDROID TV - 2017 model. I find Netflix looks better on Apple TV which is only 1080 compared to 4k/HDR on the SONY native Android Apps.

Last I checked, no. Vudu does 4k + Atmos but not HDR. That info could be out of date by now.

Thanks.

I guess one could rent new release UHD movies via Amazon and those have HDR?

Nope. I don't think anyone's streaming new releases with HDR. Amazon has a few of their own shows with HDR and that's about it

You can get Flirc on amazon.
You download SPMC then sideload it.

AppleTV has lagged behind on new tech (4k for example) so I don't think they'll be the savior on this front. My guess is that it'll eventually happen for Amazon or VUDU.

Yeah, Apple is often a year or two behind the rest of the industry.

But at this point, Vudu UHD has been around for a year and half (https://forum.vudu.com/showthread.ph...e-Devices-List).

And Amazon for almost 2.5 years (https://www.cnet.com/news/amazon-starts-4k-uhd-streams/).

So it's about time for Apple to show up and "get it right" so that is "just works" because the incumbents haven't got it right yet

Here's hoping I am wrong and that well before the UHD version of AppleTV is released with new release UHD content (insiders say later in 2017) these other providers (hardware and software) beat them to it with a set top box solution.

Nvidia and Vudu

Does the NVidia Shield have the Vudu application? and if so does it pass Dolby Vision to your Dolby Vision enable TV and Dolby Atmos to your A/V. I see Vudu has 4K with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. I have a 2016 LG OLED which does not pass Atmos through ARC so I cannot use the Vudu app on the TV for Atmos.
