I have been sifting through many, many posts in the last few days regarding the proper dvd media server to purchase. I just can't seem to find the answers I am looking for. I want a media server that is relatively inexpensive (say under or around $600) that can do the following: play .iso files well, pull the files from an external hard drive via usb (since i have two of these laying around), has digital audio output (to let my pre do the decoding) and does not need to be connected to a server (basically standalone except for the external usb hard drive). I will transfer the .iso files onto the usb hard drive from my networked computer and then unplug it from the network and plug it into the media server. Secondary options would be 480i over hdmi (or the ability to have an SDI modded output) so that I can let my scaler do the sizing. I have no interest in running this off of a network, no need for wireless ,don't care about TV and don't care about PVR functions (haven't watched a single TV show in about three years). Any help would be appreciated.

The Ziova Z500 when the 1.6 firmware upgrade comes out at the end of this month may fit your bill.

It has a USB port which I use to play AVI movies from a SD card without any issues.
It is under your budget
ISO files will play well according to the last post I saw today (with firmware 1.6)
It has digital audio output
It does not need to be connected to a server. In fact you can stream Shoutcast radio stations directly via your internet connected router.

There is a long discussion about whether it can do 480i over HDMI here or whether this is even supported under HDMI

Has anyone actually done a real objective "video shootout" of sorts to establish the visual playback quality of the various offerings now available? I'd really like to see such a shoot out if it exists, if not, perhaps someone on this forum has multiple units and might be willing to take a stab at this?

Feature are nice, but at the end of the day the most important feature for me is the quality of the visual playback. YMMV

Agreed! - I would love to see some comparative data on the new generation of media players.

I am using a Buffalo Media Link with DVD with a 1TB NAS drive and the technology is great except like most of this stuff it stops short of doing enough. I also would like to use something better. Has anyone compared this unit against others?

Does the Medigate have an HDMI output? I don't think so, but that was not his must have...
