Uh, I don't think so. You can get a 500 GB Seagate from NewEgg for $119, man. (Though personally I went with the Samsung because of its cooler temps, quieter noise readings, and equally good speeds.)

I was tempted to get the $99 (shipped) 500 GB from Frys.com, but decided that life is too short to even bother with drives that aren't whisper-quiet.

They were very upfront with the fact that the item is backordered even before I placed the order, but I'm gettin' kinda antsy over here! I don't know quite what to do with myself, you know? The suspense is killing me!

And oh yeah: why does Digital Connection have a big 1080p check-mark next to the picture of the 4100SH on their main homepage. The specifications they list says it does up to 1080i. Seems a bit misleading to have that 1080p symbol.

DC's page for the 4100SH lists it as "Back-ordered ETA 6/1/07"
Just like you I'm waiting and hope to get mine just after the 1st of July, their ETA generally seem pretty reliable. I didn't think waiting 2.5 weeks would be too bad, but this is harder than waiting for my first son to be born!

Well dude, I got good news for you: "6" is June, not July.

But I know what you mean. (And now that I do have kids, I'd gladly take a 'backorder' on any future deliveries!!!)

You are right! I guess I should drink a little more caffeine but before typing. Lets just hope that the JUNE 1st ETA is accurate. I've made sure that deliveries from the wife are permanently disabled, somedays the two kids seem like 2 too many!

Yes the 500GB price can be beat, I was thinking more of the 750GB which, I beleive is about the best.

Well, I suppose that would be because it outputs 1080p on its HDMI port (as do the Mx000 models on their DVI ports)....

DC's earlier page only listed 720p/1080i, this has since been updated.

Real quick please: Does anyone have a link to the remote codes for the 4100? I have someone here right now programming a Universal Remote MX3000 and my 4100 was sent back to Digital Connections for a broken LAN port. Of course, I sent the remote back too. I would like the programmer to take a stab at programmng the Universal Remote but he needs the codes.

Here are codes made with a MX-850:

Not yet all tested though.

So if I have a 264 files, this device will play it through my HDMI at full resolution and will it play with 5.1 sound through optical cable?

Robena,

Thanks for the codes. Unfortunately the 3000 and 850 use different file extensions and the editing software for the 3000 cannot open and read your file. I tried renaming your file, but that does not work either. Thanks though for such a quick response.

This is unclear. If you have an MPEG TS with an H.264 video stream and an AC3 audio stream, you might get 5.1 sound from the optical out.

If you have an MP4 file with a 5.1 AAC audio stream and an H.264 video stream, you will get downmixed 2 channel AAC from the analog audio outputs. I don't know what you will get out of the other ports like S/PDIF or HDMI. Perhaps others can elaborate.

cinten--

Adding to salavs' reply, I believe that the Mx100 passes AC3 and AAC audio streams out the optical port when set to "digital" audio output, so if your A/V Rec'r DSP has the necessary codec you'll get the full N.1 channels.

Myren--

Read this thread and you'll find out the differences. In brief, they're insignificant except for the packaging.

Thank you for the info, I read through most of it but couldn't seem to really get a straight answer one way of the other.

Does anyone happen to know of remember the post about how you can't see a new file on a USB HDD right away? I've tried searching but can't find it in the 700 and some odd posts in this thread. I copied a new folder to a USB HDD and the DVIX doesn't seem to see the new folder. I rebooted both the DVIX and the HDD. Any ideas?

As much as I am an early adopter....I am holding off for one generation at this time.

I'm not buying Dvico's statement. mkv is just a container. http://www.matroska.org/

I'm not sure why you're so critical of them. I've ordered twice from them (Digital Connection) and had absolutely no problem. My interaction with their customer service both through the web and over the phone was great.

The initial ship date for the 4100 was spot on to the exact day, and there was even an employee from there posting on this forum throughout the day with the exact status of the shipment.

I would order from them again in a heartbeat.

EDIT - This was in response to a post bashing DC that is no longer here... just so that no-one thinks i'm going insane posting to myself

I would second g00dfella's comment. Very pleasant experience ordering from them. They delivered the product exactly as promised.

MrReis, that has to be the worst advice today. I have ordered with DC several times, and no problems whatsoever.

On a another note, why do DC offer a free DVI cable with the 4100 unit? The 4100 has a hdmi connector

On the Tvix site they state VC-1 support. Has anyone had luck playing VC-1 files?
I'm certain I have tried several VC-1 files without sucsess. I could be mistaken though.

I am still working on getting an MKV h264/AC3 recoded with out transcoding the entire video stream. Here is the list of things I have tried, and the results... to date I have not had any real success...

SUPER -> AVI -> doesn't play on anything
SUPER -> MP4 (audio converted to AAC) -> doesn't Play on TVIX
MKV Extract -> AVC2AVI + AVIMUX -> plays, audio out of synch
PS3 Video 9 -> MP4 -> plays, audio out of synch
VLC -> TS -> No video on PC or TVIX
VLC -> MP4 (audio converted to AAC) -> doesn't play on anything
VLC -> AVI -> Conversion doesn't work properly
AVIDemux -> Anything -> Conversion doesn't finish or files don't play
ProjectX -> TS -> Conversion doesn't work because GOP > 6mb??

I'm sure there are more things I have tried but still no success yet. Has anyone tried anything else and gotten it to work?

Try Haali's gdsmux to remux the movie to MP4. You may have to reencode the AC3 track. But with a bit of luck syncing should still be ok.

Obviously all this work wouldn't be necessary if the TVIX supported MKV. That's why I'm not going to buy any hardware media player without MKV support. I've all my movies in MKV and I don't plan on changing that.

Kjelli,
I ripped Superman Returns (VC-1) and it would play, but very jittery-it was not watchable. I assume all my other VC-1 rips will work the same way, but I'll give them a shot as well. I am having problems streaming MPEG4 rips as well. It appears that blu ray rips that are MPEG 2 stream pretty well. I have watched quite a few and all stream well, with the exception of Planet of the Apes, where I can not get the english audio to stream, but the picture and other audio streams work.
