Does OLED suffer from burn-in? - AVS Forum

It seems OLED has all the pros and non of the cons of lcd and plasma. What cons does OLED have other than lifecycle shortness? Burn-in?

Since it is a a display that is based on organic chemicals that emit light when an electrical current is passed through them, yes they could suffer from burn in. Plasma uses phosphors that emit light when exposed to UV radiation and has this issue.

As some areas of the screen are used more in a pattern such as a channel logo or such, there could be burn in since the light emitting elements in that area are aged differently.

I don't know if there is any evidence of BI on OLED yet, but I have not been looking for information on it. Right now the only people who would know would be the people who bought the Sony OLED set last year and may be seeing some evidence of it.

Any display tech that generates light in individual pixels has the potential to burn-in as a result of uneven wear.

Unlike PDP or CRT, OLED has to potential ability to monitor individual pixel usage time and compensate to reduce uneven wear visibility.

Have not really paid that much attention to it xrox, but thanks for the heads up. Just one comment on the monitoring of individual pixel is that it sounds expensive.

So SDI is experimenting with building the functionality of the monitor into the backplane itself within the pixel structure. That is a good idea, but it adds another layer of complexity to the manufacturing process. It will be interesting to see if this works long term or not.
