From The Huffington Post:

Quote:
In an advertising move that's both hilarious and horrible, electronics company LG installed a grid of its new IPS monitors in the floor of an elevator, creating an optical illusion that made it appear riders were about to plummet to their deaths.

In a YouTube video posted by LGBlogUK, the displays are arranged on the floor in a three-by-three grid. The horrified faces of the allegedly unsuspecting elevator riders are then filmed for comedic, er, marketing effect when the floor appears to give out.

Using the tagline, "So Real, It's Scary," the ad dovetails nicely with Halloween -- a holiday that encourages scary pranks.

The LG monitor advertised--an "in-place switching" model--is supposed to be able to deliver "true-to-life colors" and "smooth color clarity" from any given angle, according to its website.

The company has used unconventional marketing videos in the past to drum up interest in its high-tech products. In January, a video showing a "smart thief" (actually an actor) stealing one a LG Ultrathin OLED television was viewed more than 5 million times.

Funny, but they could have used a 15 year old 480i monitor and probably have gotten the same response. Not really a good demonstration of monitor sharpness.

Regardless, the focus is on LG's marketing of their TV tech, not the source, so please refrain from playing politics on this thread. Thanks.

Quite interesting. Although the startled reaction IMO is due to the sound more than the flling floor. Again, still very interesting.

Greenscreen and CGI and actors. They aren't standing on the monitors.

It was probably because of acting.

Well, had I been part of the experiment, the experiment would have been over after my turn in the elevator.

They'd eventually give up trying to mop all the brown stuff off the monitors and go home.

Just keep talkin'. I'll let you know when you're right.

If you had been part of it you would have seen that you were just standing on a greenscreen so it wouldn't be scary.

Notice the perspective (of what is shown on the TVs) changes with the different camera shots, in reality the perspective of what is shown on the TVs would be the same in each shot.
Notice the green light from the greenscreen on the railing in one shot.
You can see problems where people walk out of the lift and partly disappear (because they're trying to composite the fake floor in there) - with green light from the greenscreen where the floor is showing, and other shots where problems where the (fake) floor/edges are moving around.

Hmmm. Knowing the legal implications of such a stunt, my first thoughts were:

A. Paid actors or
B. Some European country populated by less litigious people.

But... If the tiles just went green, that might cause a startled reaction by the participants without their sphincter falling out. I'm buying this explanation until I hear a better one.

Just keep talkin'. I'll let you know when you're right.
