I apologize for starting a new thread since my other thread on this topic was poorly thought out.

KV36-510hs Wega just died. Budget $1000.
Room has windows on 2 walls with poor quality shades, TV on corner stand so there is off angle viewing, kids play hours each day of the same game with a HUD and first person shooter (halo) and news with news tickers are the next most viewed. Kids watch from their bean bags ... 4 ft away so I would like a 48-50" television and not go too huge.

I worry about plasma: IR with the games. and news tickers. Brightness might be an issue, and flickering, possible reflections.
LCD: picture not as good, worse off angle viewing, ghosting, shudders or trails from fast action games.
No ideal technology but what would be best from those with expertise?
So any opinions would be good food for thought.

Thanks
Dan

Great suggestion thanks! A 50" comes as Sony 50r550a, wih good scores for input lag. Too bad it was $100 less just a month ago :-/

You never know what kind of pricing you will find from one day to the next. This past weekend Fry's had the 70R550A for $1699.

Plus Sony has totally up-ended the entire UPP thing by hacking $1500 off of their top guys.  So this will (I'm guessing) cause a ripple effect all the way down the line.  The folks that just bought a W900A, for instance, are grumbling that the X850A and X900A are suddenly within reach.  And of course, the early adopters of the X900A are feeling a little burned (which by the way is to be expected).

I have the 60R550A, and while I like it a lot, I have to point out that using the settings that make it look the best tend to subdue it a tad.  Not too dark by any means: it's absolutely got that LCD brightness even in a bright room, but it got me wondering just how far off a plasma would have been in its place.  If you're looking at plasmas, the reviewers seem to love the pana ST60 for ability and value.

WARNING: You have now entered a no @#$%tard zone. Please gather your anti-vaccine propaganda nonsense and slowly back out the way you came in.

Yep, the ST60 not only seems to be very well priced but the reviewers love it. If brightness is an issue the Sammy 8500 series is fantastic but quite a bit more $$$ then the ST60. Of course with both you are limited to a max size of 65". As much as I like my 70R550A, if the ST60 was available in a 70" that's what I'd be watching right now.

Plasma is pretty dam screwy in the day time depending on your lighting conditions. I bought a Led tv and can say that the reflection is not as bad as when I owned a Plasma. I miss the blacks that plasma brings. Each technology has its pros and cons.

Thanks for all the replies. For my situation LCD will probably be better.
I'm going from a 4:3 36" wega to either a 46" or 50" but any bigger starts to worry me since the kids are used to sitting 4' away on their beanbags. Considering what I paid 8 years ago for the Wega, all these TVs are cheap.
Now all I need is good picture, really good gaming, and more pf a matte screen.

Many LCDs are going glossy so this seems to be hampering me.

Vizio E500i or M series, and Sony (50r550a since the 802a is 55") seem like tops right now, and maybe a Samsung... But their better TVs have insanely wide stands (this will be on a corner stand).
Sam's or Costco or BestBuy would be best if a return needs to happen too.

Thanks
