Either would be suprising from a fresh off the line set.

What do you mean? A subpixel that is turned off at all times is what I would call dead.

vinnie97 and tgm1024 like this.

^Yep, and to be specific as to avoid confusion, I refer to them as dead subpixels. The silver lining is no one has yet reported a completely dead pixel. wink.gif

Upgraded AV receiver 2 years ago and moved from 5 to 7 channel...everything sits on Wal-Mart furniture!

Well Theplague13 noted some viable lines on solid color and The poor grey uniformity might show up always good to check while you can pack it back up.

Yeah, a stuck pixel is actually much worse, although they can go away on their own. But they're always active on a certain color no matter what color is being displayed. They look terrible on black screens whereas at least dead pixels are black themselves. Haven't seen any pixels get stuck on this set.

8 is too many I think also. But it's good that they separate them from whites, which would stand out much more.

I didnt expect this kind of pricing until the end of the year. It looks like a sub $3500 1080p (maybe even $3000?) is a lock for the end of the year.

FWIW, that "news" is very old.

Samsung hasnt talked about building a Gen 8 fab in a very long time and I think the fact that they didnt show an OLED at CES should have been a pretty big clue for anybody paying attention. They'll continue their R&D work until they can figure out a manufacturing process that allows for them to compete with LG's pricing.

So LG is to remain the sole manufacturer of OLED displays for at least some forseeable years?

That's odd though....what are they doing that other brands can't accomplish? LG was never known for its high end displays before.

But what's their secret? Samsungs 2013 OLED was supposedly just as good, and remains in the 8-9k range. Something must be going on that's stopping them from producing more. Something weird about it to me.

They bought the patents for the WRGB (4 pixel) architecture that is used in their televisions. It is much simpler to manufacture than Samsung's approach. They also put their R&D dollars behind research into a IGZO backplane that is also cheaper than Samsung's LTPS backplanes.

If this works, it could be a change the company kind of move for LG. Domination in high-end televisions could change their image across a whole host of other products.

It's unlikely anyone else can produce in volume before 2017. Perhaps someone will produce in some quantities by 2016. Whoever comes next will now face the same cost/volume dilemma OLED faced in the first place, however.

Yeah, a halo product for sure.

I guess we're about to find out how big/small the market for $3500 55" TVs is. I say it's still very small (as I have for a long time), but I'm pleased to see the price coming down somewhat ahead of schedule. That speaks well of production improvements, though it also points out there was no market at all at the higher prices.

There is no difference in HDMI cables. If you can see the picture without visible dropouts or sparklies, the cable is working at 100%. No other cable will display a better version of that picture. You're simply wrong if you think there is a better digital cable than one that is already working. (Oh, and plasma didn't die because of logistics problems, nor does OLED ship in big boxes because it comes from Korea.)

That is certainly viable info.
But there's really no way any other manufacturer can create OLED if not through WRGB? What is it that makes the quad subpixel design so much cheaper than the industry standard RGB?

Also Sony recently filed a contract with LG to purchase their panels instead of Samsung in a gambit to reverse the total yen lossage they've been experiencing since the ps3 came out, which almost ruined the company as they are notorious for selling products at a loss. Still, even with LG producing panels for them and their reputation for reaching almost too high, Sony hasn't published any information regarding OLED displays.

It's just that this tech is so much better, drastically in every way concerning pq, that you'd think other manufacturers would find a way to stop LG from dominating such an important new market. But they're not. They're all just ignoring OLED.

I'm all for LG changing their image, but if they remain the sole manufacturer of what is poised to be "the future of displays" then in fact it isn't the future of displays.

The guys who buy at $4k will beat themselves when the price drops to $3k, and so it goes.

They lowered the price because they realized they don't have to produce 8,294,400 sub pixels anymore, but a maximum of only 8,294,399.

....lol, joke. Nobody freak out please.
