What is it for you guys? Whether it be a traditional film, a 2 minute short, an animation, a silent film, or hell even a single image. What is the absolute pinnacle of visual pleasure you've ever experienced on a household 1080p display (no projectors), and why? Choose one thing for any reason you'd like; feel free to mention the specific display but focus more on the 1080 render itself.

If I sow a wind now, I will reap a storm.

Thus far for me, it's Oblivion.

The footage shot with the Sony F65 camera is absolutely stunning. Incredible grain-free detail and DP Claudio Miranda's usage of depth of field in some of the closeups is masterful.

I hope to see a LOT more movies shot with this camera.

Yep, on Blu Ray. It's my go to PQ and AQ demo. The visuals are stunning and the soundtrack is great too. Great use of LFE and a nicely done music score by M83. In fact, that's one of the cool features of the BD; you can play the isolated music score and enjoy the visuals accompanied by just the music score (no dialogue or sound effects).

BTW, if your display is calibrated properly and can produce deep blacks without crushing them, there's a short but cool scene in the movie. You'll know it when you see it.

I'm really digging the VHS version.

There is no difference in HDMI cables. If you can see the picture without visible dropouts or sparklies, the cable is working at 100%. No other cable will display a better version of that picture. You're simply wrong if you think there is a better digital cable than one that is already working. (Oh, and plasma didn't die because of logistics problems, nor does OLED ship in big boxes because it comes from Korea.)

I got dragged to see Oblivion by the wife (i wasn't interested in seeing it because i'm apparently in competition with Tom Cruise) but to my surprise i really liked the movie, and even rented the Blu-Ray and watched it at home by myself.

When i first met my wife she invoked the right to sleep with "Tom" in the 1-in-a-quadrillion chance the opportunity were to arrive, but i'm actually ok with it since my go-to-gal is Kate Upton biggrin.gif

So i am going to drag her to see The Other Woman. What's good for the Goose is good for the Gander wink.gif

Sleep with Tom Cruise? I'm gonna' vomit.

There were actually 2 things that made me want to avoid Oblivion, Tom Cruise and Morgan Freeman. No, I'm not a racist (my hate is equitable).

Worst ever picture quality moment that made me really think that anyone of us could reach the stars:

Watching Neil Armstrong step onto the moon!

My favorite colors ever--the green of the New York Jets--the blue of the Baltimore Colts--the Orange of the Orange Bowl--and the Audacity of Joe Namath doing what all the geniuses of that time said was impossible.

And how about the Blue and Orange of the New York Mets that year?

TV had only been all color since the 1966 season. We had much worse technology back then. And the country had more divisions then than now--

But we did have imagination

What color is that?

Lol yeah I despise Tom Cruise, but I like Morgan Freeman.....to an extent. Tom quite literally lost his mind, I'd be terrified just to be in his company

True...he's gotta' love how Hoffman and Phoenix portrayed his cult. biggrin.gif

Regarding Morgan Freeman, he has a helluva lot of hubris, and that's all I'll say about that (other than say he's also a bit hypocritical). wink.gif

He does, and I dislike when actors think that because we watch them in movies were supposed to care about political ideas which they shove down our throat, whether I may agree with them or not. So yeah, Freeman is full of pomp. Tom Cruise is an all around loon, for him it isn't politics but the obvious, religion. He thinks he's like the human incarnation of "xenu" or whatever scientologists call their deity. He thinks he can cure people of disease by touching them, and says working on a Hollywood movie set is like being a soldier in combat......sheesh

Anyways enough of that. I'd still watch the movie anyway I'd just be hesitant to actually support it by purchasing a full priced copy. I'm am wanting to see it on the OLED now though after what he said!!

In any event, what's yours Vinnie?

(Art again with his exaggerated ambiguity......lol)

Morgan Freeman is no longer entertaining. Let's be honest. The guy was great, and now he's a bad caricature of Morgan Freeman when he shows up. Enough already.

Oblivion definitely earned mixed reviews. I liked it a good deal; I respect others that didn't. It's kind of a perfect Cruise role, but then so was Jack Reacher. Neither is a great film. He's older. He's the "couch guy" who we all know is a Scientologist. He's never going to be the same actor of his youth because of this....

So be it.

Still digging the VHS, by the way. smile.gif

Agreed, for the most part (though I'd put more emphasis on cruises psychosis than Freeman's failing career; he's far more than just an armchair scientoligist). Either way, this has turned into a topic about Morgan Freeman and Tom Cruise. All we've got so far in terms of answers to the topic are Oblivion for best and Moon landing for worst (whatever the F* that means).

So oblivion is the best for at least one of us and the rest may agree but hate the actors. What's everyone else's favorite???

If I sow a wind now, I will reap a storm.

It's hard to pick a fave, so I'll just go for what was likely debut of HD for me, and that is King Kong on HD DVD, which I could best describe as a revelation. Otherwise it has to be some of those IMAX scenes in Christian Bale's portrayal of Batman (speaking of Morgan!).

The recent LG 4K Garden and Europe demos have probably the best PQ I've seen to date, even when watched on a 1080p screen. You can find some links here: http://www.avsforum.com/t/1506723/ultimate-4k-demo-material-information-thread The clarity and contrast are jaw-dropping.
If we're talking about movies, I agree, Oblivion is a reference. These are also honorable mentions:

Pacific Rim
Totall Recall (new one)
The Dark Knight
The Dark Knight Rises

I will update the list.

I've also got to say that Oblivion is the best HD image I've seen from a major motion picture.

Watched the film on a Samsung F8000 and was blown away by the level of detail, but it was the LED's inabilty to do justice to the darker sections of the film that convinced me that OLED is the way to go.

Wow. And I hadn't even thought of Oblivion, ever. Seems to be demo quality with no green screen stuff and a 7.1 soundtrack, awesome. Wish it was 1:85:1 though. Oh well. I'll have to track it down one if these days.

I actually didn't know the answer to my own question until now. The Imax scenes from TDK and TDKR. How they injected so much freaking detail into my screen for those shots I'll never understand. Why didn't they just put the whole film out that way?

I also own Oblivion (and like alot of Tom's work, in spite of his apparent off-screen "kookiness"), and it's one of the better-looking digital transfers I've seen so far.

My choice though would be Lawrence of Arabia on Blu-ray. The sound quality leaves a bit to be desired, but the restoration Sony did on the image from badly deteriorating 65mm elements is nothing short of miraculous.

If you have a fast internet connection, there's also some fairly impressive 1080p, and now 2160p content available on YouTube. A recent example I rather like...

Cyrillic is used throughout eastern Europe, and Asia. (I believe that particular video is from Bulgaria or thereabouts.) I'm sure there are as good, if not better HD clips from other areas though. There's some amazing digital cinematography in recent Bollywood films, for example. And I'm sure there's equally good stuff being done in places like Japan and China, and elsewhere. I just haven't gotten around to exploring those yet. Maybe someone else can make a few recommendations along those lines.

I did not know that Cyrillic was used outside of former Soviet Union countries. Thank you, I'm a fan of earthly knowledge smile.gif

Yeah I can definitely imagine Japan making some leaps and bounds in PQ that's for sure.

Single greatest PQ achievement of the FHD era?

The thing I keep coming back to is Sin City.

Java developers, when I saw what has been placed into Java 8 I was immediately reminded of how I've spent so much of my life trying to protect engineers from themselves. Lambda expressions are a horrible idea. Gentlemen: the goal isn't to make code readable for a competent mid-level engineer. The goal is to make code readable for a competent mid-level engineer exhausted and hopped up on caffeine at 3 am. What a disaster Java 8 is!

Yeah, I had a feeling that was your choice TGM. It's certainly close. Btw, as a reader of the comic have you watched the extended cut where each story is lengthened and separated, and is it better? I didn't realize it existed when I got the blu Ray and picked up the plain one by accident frown.gif
