Ok, I can agree with you on Lost, BSG, and House. I haven't watched Bones yet but it looks ok.

Survivor, American Idol, and Desperate Housewives are for chicks. Now if your wife forced you to watch it and it gradually grew on you....I understand.

BTW, thanks for reminding me to watch BSG. Where has my mide been today...new episode. Later

Well here is my new idea. Just saw the new DLP by Samsung that uses LED instead of the stupid wheel and now uses Laser LED light. It's going to be around the same price and offer 56 inches instead of 50 inches and it's going to offer TRUE 1080p instead of the plasma's 720p.

The LED DLP is going to be around the same price and out around the same time as the Panny. Also since the bulb's use LED now, they will be around 20,000 hours instead of the stupid 4,000-6,000 hours.

Plasma does sound great, but I live in Los Angeles and I don't want to risk an earthquake pulling my new plasma off the wall. So I was not going to put it on the wall.

With no color wheel and new LED lamps instead of traditional lamps lasting a much better 20,000 before brightness fades, that isn't all that bad. I know the panny lasts 60,000 hours, but then again image retention is something I would rather not have. Also the samsung LED DLP has 2 HDMI inputs for real 1080p.

What do you all think?

Remember here is what I would have:
Comcast Digital Cable (HDTV) 720p
Xbox 360 component (720p)
DVD 480p

What is a laser LED? All lasers I am familiar with are monochromatic, so what are they doing to increase the spectrum? Especially after removing the color wheel.

Put siz 3 inch lags in the wall mount and the wall will come down before the Plasma.

Docwiz,

My buddy that brought the X-box over has a DLP (couple years old- 62" I think) and he has never seen s plasma hooked up other than in a B&M store. My pd50u was set to Fox over the air when I turned it on (720p) and the second the TV came on he said "Ohhhh yeah." We then proceeded to hook up the X-360 and the first thing he said was "wow, the colors are so much brighter." Since that night he has commented three times on the "wonderful color."

He was a hard core believer on "HD only" until he saw my pd50u. The bottom line is that the color and contrast give the unit an incredible "wow factor." Add that to some stunning detail and you have a winner. Especially when it comes to the X-360.

Anyway, I think you have some valid reasons on the other side of the coin, but it says alot that my buddy is now researching plasmas. He is currently trying to come to grips with the ED vs. HD issue. BTW, he is hopelessly addicted to his X360, its like X-crack.

Best of luck to you...

That's the funniest thing about all these different perspectives about plasmas. Its not very often that someone mentions the concept of "improvement." For a vast majority of the viewers out there, a new plasma TV will offer a significantly improved viewing experience, regardless of the model (panny thread here). I just don't see why this issue isn't at least as big as the "future proofing concept?" Maybe its just me, but if I spend money to buy something and my purchase is vastly superior to what I had, why do I care about the rest of the details? Then again, I understand the desire to future-proof, especially if money is a concern.

Really, I am not sure what's worse... being sold by a wanne-be techno expert or an ill-informed salesperson.
Are you really that wealthy that spending $9000 (or more) for a TV is a trivial thing? Are you really going to shell out another $9K in 2-3 years when the Blu-ray sources become available and your TV cannot show the best picture quality in its native resolution? I'd like to be able to put my daughter through college someday, and it aint gonna happen if I'm upgrading my TV for $9Gr. every 2-3 years. And it's not as if the TV is the only thing that needs upgrading. There are new surround formats that get developed and force us to upgrade receivers or pre-/pros. Many of us are computer hobbyists as well; you need a new computer every 2-3 years. We even need to upgrade our cars every 5 years or so.

Therefore, we future-proof as much as possible so that we don't have to upgrade as often. That is why I am concerned about 1080P input.

You are right to be concerned. Although, I have been guilty of frequent upgrade. Many people around me have benefited by getting some nice displays cheap :)

My way of dealing with it is to always buy displays that accept native rate. This allows scalers and PCs to be used. There is no way on earth I would buy at 1080P display that did not accept in as an input with no overscan.

It's not a true laser, just uses the same principle. They added 3 secondary colors to the mix to increase the color gamut.

Here in Canada, as soon as Panasonic made these announcements, Futureshop pulled the 50PX500 off their web site, and BestBuy.ca set the product as out of stock.

I'm thinking (hoping) it's early spring (ie April) as oppose to late spring/summer for these models, as I can't see Panasonic (and Futureshop/Best Buy) going from now (January) until JUNE without a 50" Panny Plasma in Canada (where these two retailers have exclusive carrying rights for this model, and they don't carry the 50PX50).

Here's a quick bit of video on the new Panasonic plasmas at CES...

Funny how many times I've imagined an 80 or 100" Panasonic plasma hanging on my wall. Now the beasts actually (almost) exist.

Also, it looks like the Panny 65" will finally arrive for sale in North America just as SED comes close to commercial availability...choices...choices....

I took a look at the video. Thanks for posting it.

Besides the continuous information gathering, it keeps coming back to "Decisions, decisions, decisions!"
Does one buy from this new batch (the 50 600 series, or the next level as shown in the video above) when they hit the stores, which sounds more and more like May+ or keep on waiting? But then, what are the stores (and people) to do in the meantime? As far as this batch is concerned for anyone who is seeking to buy the replacement for the next iteration of the 50" panny, it seems that it will be a while before the trigger can be pulled (at least by me).

While it looks as if the 60U does not have RGB input - can you still hook up a PC via the other video input terminals? Has anyone done it? If so would you have PQ issues?

Don't care much for PIP and no need for EPG (with Comcast/Moto HD box) - so i can't see shellin and extra $500 for RGB if the other inputs work just fine.

BTW - i think i like the black bezel of the 50U better.

i think it will have the regular 2 RGB inputs but they just dont mention it.

i have a very important question for you guys.

contrast being the same (lets assume for now) how much better will the PQ be on the 60s with 29 billion colors than on the 50s with 9 billion colors??????????

This almost reminds of the old quote that "is the man who has $100 million dollars in the bank as happy as the man who has $101 million dollars".

But the intent of your comment in terms of the human eye, is "can we really see a difference between 29 bil vs. 9 bil"?

As such does this then come back to the Rod Serling Twilight Zone episode entitled "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder."? where what was beautiful to one group was really ugly to the other.

Realize I am not denegrating you comment. It is -Are we getting caught up in the bang for the buck? or the "Mine has more than your" syndrome?

Unless there are those out there who see it differently, is there really that much of a difference at that level?

man i just got back from BB and there was a panasonic rep that knew NOTHING about the new 06 model line and prob knew less than I did about the 05 line (hard to believe)! Anyways I looked at some 50in and 42in sets side by side from about 9-10ft away (this is how far my couch is to where the PDP will be placed) and I am thinking 42in is a tad too small and 50in is a tad to big. I don't want to go LCD so Plasmas will have to be it. Choices! Choices!

So much options, dilemnas, etc :D
