I haven't owned the Sammy D8000, so can't really comment on a direct comparison.
Also, Plasmas Vs LED LCDs is a whole different animal!..
What kind of ambient lighting do you have where the TV will be placed ? If it's too bright, you may find the Plasma too dull for viewing. Plasma performance is directly conducive to ambient light. The darker it is, the better the PQ.
Some people find Plasma's too dull [i.e. no pop], period. If you're the kind that likes bright, pop'ing colors, go with a LED instead!
Having said that, I just dished out for a Panasonic TC-P65VT30 and snagged it for $2487 shipped from Amazon [Price matched to US Appliance, now OOS] I would've recommend that had I known you were considering Plasmas too!
I like both techs, plasma and LED. But, for LED, I personally can't live with any that's not Full Array with Local Dimming because I'm overly anal and sensitive with electronics and see every little imperfection lol. The HX929 isn't perfect, and neither is the Panny VT30, but [ apparently ] they are about as good as it gets now, sans the over priced Sharp Elite [which has issues too!!]
Honestly, I personally stay away from Samsungs because of the damn panel roulette / lottery, although not sure if this applies to their Plasma Panels
, and their post sales CS, or lack thereof!
I've also heard more complaints about Samsung Plasmas [ Brightness Fluctuation aka Fbr issues that were fixed by Panasonic, but not acknowledged or addressed by Samsung, Screen Peeling and Buzzing Issue on the Sammy ] over Panasonics.
