Was curious how the LG PM9700 did. I had the chance to get the 60 inch for $1550. Wondering if I should be kicking myself for passing that up.

the only worthy challenger to the VT50 is the LG/Samsung OLED

Ok, i'm waiting for oled. My understanding is the LG was at Cannes last week and either is available for purchase over there or very soon. Anyone in Europe, let us know.

Were there any comments of concern about IR on the VT50?

It's never been an issue for me on my 2008 Panny 58PZ850 but if for some reason the VT50 does not handle it as well it could be an issue for me as majority of my content is movies (black bars and black bars sub titles) and gaming.

Ugh... I have never watched a blu-ray and said "damn" that color cyan is off.

So I guess I ignore it as I haven't seen anything that looked off. Don't watch the Today Show...

Do you know of any Blu-Rays that has a prominent color in many scenes that is cyan? I would love to check it out..

Congrad's to the VT50...

Curious to how these shoot-outs go? Is it a lot of graphs and color charts or do you watch "real-world" blu-ray discs as well?

Like Avatar or something similar? A Sci-fi with lots of black background? It's great the higher end has a couple of solid choices. I know when I watch a blu-ray I am blown away..

Did they show the 60 or 70 inch Elite? Part of a crown is size to me and I could never go smaller than 70 inch now. I wish there had of been an 80 inch Elite when I purchased...

But regardless, sounds like a fun time. Congrad's to the Panny.

Great to hear, thanks! I think someone posted something about it being an issue over the weekend, may not be credible but best to ask. I've been super happy with my Panny plasma for the past 3 years, broke it in properly and have never had IR that could not be wiped by a day or so of mixed full screen content.

I'm heading back to Best Buy one night this week to do another session of testing between the Elite and VT50 minus the indirect sunlight from the skylights in the ceiling.

Well, they share the same basic PDP. While the VT50 will have some neat features that the GT50 & ST50 lack. The PQ will be quite close for a few hundred less dollars in both cases, the ST being the cheapest.

Just go see the reviews on CNET where they tested the ST50. They also tested the top of the line plasma from Samsung (PN60E8000). They actually preferred the Panny ST50, the 3rd model down from the flagship Panny VT50, over the Samsung flagship PN60E8000 plasma that's a few hundred more. That right there speaks volumes.

See my previous post. One website that that has tested all three Panny models, in the UK, is HDTVtest. They say that the stiffest competition to the VT50 may be Panny's own GT50 and ST50 lines! A second one, also in the UK, is AVForums.

I also recommend that you follow CNET's reviews on the GT50 and VT50 when they come out and compare them to their ST50 review (already available). They have quite a well stocked lab and a high-end Konica-Minolta colorimeter and perform quite thorough reviews where they publish all the objective measurement data from their tests.

What is a VT65? Did you mean VT50? If so, no but is is really close now and I finally have something worthy to go to if any of my Kuros takes a no fixable dump.

Yes and thanks for the info. I bought a used 60" Kuro last year as an interim display till there is something clearly better. Seems waiting to see what develops with oled as well as the next Elite is a prudent course of action.

D-Nice, congratulations and kudos to you, Robert, Kevin et all for another excellent shoot-out. I didn't see it all yet but what I did see, was once more a real treat. I can't wait to see it all on Youtube. Thanks again for your hard work and expert analysis; it's really appreciated!

You are very wrong my friend. The 929 was not included in this year's shootout because it is not classifed as a 2012 model. The only reason the Sharp Elite was included this year because it was the reigning champ (new rule we implemented for this year's shootout). The 2013 Shootout will include the VT50 because it won this year. If nothing next year beats it, it will be in the 2014 shootout... and will continue to be in the shootout until it is beaten.

The only Kuro Robert had available had damage to the screen (500M). We decided not to including it because it was almost a guarentee one, or more, of you all would have been bitchin that we put a damage display in the shootout. If you would like to see a VT50 next to a Kuruo... both fully calibrated, you are more than welcome to visit me in SC.

No the rule was just implemented this year. So last year the Elite won and I don't think the Kuro was even officially in the competition, but it may have been scored. Either way we now have two Kuro killers to pick from this year and that is not even counting the OLEDs and 4K LCDs next year. Good times ahead.

You cannot have two Kuro killers when neither the Sharp nor the VT50 equals it (2nd Gen Kuro that is). If you think otherwise, please show the data.
