In the future I want to see a true (not digital) analog flat screen technology that operates just like a crt tv. In the future, after my crt tv goes out, I will be looking for an analog 525 scan lines ntsc with interlace scan method only flat screen tv (not progressive scan method ) 4:3 aspect ratio flat screen tv technology (non hd) that the picture quality is the same or better than crt tv's and last a lot longer than crt tv's I will in the future get this type of tv if this is available when my crt goes out. I will be playing my older video game systems on it. Also I am going to hook up my vcr to this tv. I will also down convert my home videos to new vhs tapes from my sony dcr-sx83 480i camcorder I have today. I will also use a DVD player for my home videos for this type of tv. I will still back up my home videos to backup disc storage on my computer. Is this technology more likey to come out in the future for a small market than crt tv's going back into the production line? I am a retrogamer!

Thanks,

Never going to happen. Technology almost never goes backward.

Wow! Analog display, 4:3 aspect ratio, and VHS? Sorry, but none of that will be available ever again. Do yourself a favor and transfer your tapes to DVD. And sorry, but they are not going to look great on any HDTV.

Nowadays even the bottom tier plasmas blow the doors off any CRT except in motion blur.

I have just one question:

Why?

As in,

Why would a tv manufacturer make such a tv?

Why do you think that flat screen means digital? The first flat screen TVs had analog tuners.

Don't you realize that having just an analog tuner in the tv would mean you won't get HD over the air? HD is digital, even though a flat panel doesn't dictate what type of tuner can be used in it, but the VAST majority of stations have moved to digital.

Why do you want interlaced scanning? It is inferior to progressive scanning, unless you WANT a dimmer tv with a flickering picture?!

Why would you not want HD? You do know that all it means is a flicker-free, brighter, more detailed picture with more color depth. In short, it's better than 525 lines.

He wants to play older games designed for the NTSC video standard. They are not compatible with progressive scan displays or HD resolutions. Older shooter games use a "gun" containing a photo cell which is compared to the video signal to figure out where the "gun" is pointing. None of this is compatible with an HDTV, even one set up to scale NTSC video to HD.

bringbackcrttv, your two choices are to refurbish/repair an old CRT direct-view or RPTV, or go with a front projector that is compatible with the 480i signal (15kHz H frequency, 60Hz V frequency). None of the newer HDTV displays work with the old shooter games.

Another alternative is to buy new games.

How can a "Flat screen" be analog??? confused.gif
Whatever the technology, it is digital by nature of the design.

"Flat screen" doesn't necessarily mean digital. CRT-based rear-projection TVs that were the state of the art a little over a decade ago had flat screens (though they weren't flat panels) and they were analog.

Actually, the term should of been "flat panel" since this is a "flat panel" sub-forum. wink.gif

That post is obviously a few months early - looks like it was meant for April 1st? biggrin.gif

And another thing...when are we going to see a smart phone shaped and sized like a WW2 Walkie-Talkie? You know...like the circa 1982 analog cell phones only "smarter". Could not beat the clear analog, no-digital processing sound. You could rest these beasts on your shoulder and talk for hours.

Picture this with a super-amoled screen in the handset.

Also how about a return to reliable vacuum tubes instead of transistorized semiconductor electronics?
Tubes are immune to EMP attacks that would wipe out modern semiconductor electronics... wink.gif

Why don't they go back to black & white TVs while they're at it.

Then just turn down the color setting on your TV set to zero, and go back to living in 1950!

Yes and the lack of motion blur on a crt makes a huge difference. It is one of the reasons I'm still watching my analog CRT-RPTV- still the best picture! DLPs are fast but the picture looks flat to me. Maybe it's the screen on them because they look great at the theater. Hope Mitsubishi comes out with a 4K DLP TV.
