^^^Is it my monitor (certainly not out of the question) or are you experiencing some crushing of the low-end grays to black here?

Cogito ergo sum makes a fundamental mistake because it ignores the implied existence of the narrator. Descartes might as well have said "A rose is red, therefore I am".

For me on my Samsung oled tab s it looks softer than I seen on LG oled TVs but colours looks perhaps better.

More likely his camera, tgm. It's very difficult to capture all of the shadow detail when taking these screenshots. It's a real art to getting a really good screenshot.

I shot at maximum aperture (f/1.4) which may have been a mistake, the images are pleasing but contrasty: the whites are a bit harsh and some shadow detail is missing compared to the actual image. I'm not sure I can capture the shadow details in-camera, I may need to post process in LR or Capture.

I'm currently shooting in Manual mode, but I've also tried Auto with no flash and the result is the same: slightly clipped blacks. I welcome any suggestions.

Having said that, I do feel the set is clipping the blacks a bit, despite my getting great calibration results. I notice this, more so, on 2.4:1 material, so it can get confusing.

Would you say it's impossible to capture these black levels without Photoshop or LR, or Capture? I don't see how these subtle shadows can be captured next to bright scenes in the same image in-camera. I even put a movie on pause and took an HDR shot, but still not close to what I was seeing on the display when it came to revealing shadow detail.

Thanks, I dig the sharpness, color and the composition of each shot. Needs more tweaking though to get to the next level.

I saw one of the LGs just last week at a BB, and the picture was gorgeous. The picture on the Samsung OLED (when they had it in the store) was equally vibrant and colorful, almost neon-like, but I would not watch it that way. It all depends on what settings you prefer.

The problem with trying to capture what a screen is doing are all the places where variables are introduced.

Screen--->(through ambient light)--->Lens--->Sensor--->Image Format/Resolution---> (...) ---> MY screen with MY settings and MY computer's CMS and windows 7 getting in the @#$%ing way

Oye. Not even close to an easy process.

I'd say it's almost impossible. I suspect the real photographers among us would shoot RAW and then post-process. That's your best shot at bringing out both highlights and shadow details.

LG OLEDS have more punch, Samsung's are more detailed with better color accuracy. Good observation

Such beauty in these images. I'm telling everyone reading this now that, when I end up pulling the trigger on my OLED, I will disappear from these boards for a good 6 months or so, while I rematch all my favorite blu-rays! Any rumors about my unfortunate (or fortunate, depending on the reader's inclination) demise will be false. I'm just preemptively shooting down such rumors now, before it becomes a thing, and people get banned.

I just have a lot of movies to rewatch!

How's your tripod? Camera shake can ruin your shots more than anything, and it affects all cameras.

About the great quality of the screen shots in the plasma thread, I recall when I had my Pioneer 5080 that I had a hard time with screen captures, in particular when photographing dark images. The black bars were visible and sometimes they were totally a different color. There was always a rumor in the plasma thread the bars were clipped in the images to make them look black. I'm beginning to believe this, because I don't have this issue with OLED anymore. In my shots the bars are naturally black, all the time, even when the exposure is not right.

I'm reading that the upcoming LG 4K OLEDs will have smooth motion and minimal artifacts. Vegas, will you compare your Samsung's motion to the 65 4k oled when it comes out? It will be interesting to compare. I hope there will be no noise reduction filter on the upcoming 4k oleds...
