But what tv besides the x950b, which isn't out yet, is worth it? Every last one is edge lit nonsense unless he buys something online or on eBay.

Why wouldn't you recommend a projector tgm?

Full stop world is dying to know why Vegas, protector of all things oled and LG replaced his set wink.gif

When one of my cats was a kitten, she'd hop up onto the table, walk between the monitor and the tower and fall asleep with her head on the keyboard.  Your pics here reminded me of that.  So cool.

How did you give your first oled back to whatever retailer you purchased it from if there was nothing wrong with it?

I just said I was not happy with it, was open box (their display) so they could not charge restock. This time I purchased new in the box from the same retailer, they were out of stock of new one last time. I was very happy with the 1st one, I just wanted to try some 4k, very boring after 30 minutes.

Weren't you the guy who was talking about how dumb everyone who buys a 4k set is? Not trying to start an argument I just seem to remember that. Then you bought one. What changed your mind? You were pretty headstrong about it unless I'm thinking of someone else.

Was 4k upscaled content boring or actual 4k? And what size was it? Legitimate 4k content looks freaking incredible. I mean it's a higher resolution so I think calling it better (if housed in the right technology of course) would be a pretty objective statement.

My opinion has changed to anyone who buys a 4k set under 65" is wasting money. I was happy with my first OLED but I wanted a brand new one so I took a detour just to check out 4K. 4k is excellent but let's face it will be at least 10 years before it is broadcast over the air. When I tried out the Sony 65x850B there were times when it was very impressive even with up conversion, but the light bleeding and other issues with the backlight were not acceptable for $4 grand.

Then I did some 4K streaming which looked very good but it was limited too a couple of videos and a few episodes of one show,

The Sony 65x950 is much nicer, best I have seen in LCD, $8k when an OLED is $4k keeps me from going that route.

I understand 4k more than before and you can see a difference on larger sets, overall OLED offers a much better picture on what I am going to be watching 98% of the time.

Besides the first thing my wife said when she looked at the Sony was, " the other TV had a much better picture", funny how they never notice a better picture until it's worse.

What a load of nonsense, I'm sorry.

"Anyone" huh?  Even the people who wish to game on it while sitting closely?  Even the people who wish to one day repurpose it as a computer monitor?  Even the folks who CAN see the difference, despite what that ridiculous Carlton Bale chart attempts to establish?

All THOSE people are wasting money too?

I do not see a difference on a 55" 4k set. Sure if your going to sit 2 feet from it you might. But a 55" OLED with destroy any LCD in picture quality. All the experts say it because it's true.

4k sets are made to sell Larger TVs in smaller spaces. I would not even purchase a 4k 55" OLED and doubt LG will waste panels on anything under 65" in 4K.

But a 4k OLED set would be better still.

Sure, if you sat 2 feet away. I don't see it on the Sony 55900B from 7 feet. The cost of producing OLED is so high I doubt LG at this time, will manufacture 4k sets under 65".

My Retina screen IPad is better but not from 3 feet away.

Can't wait to see one, and also how they upscale regular hd sources, like sports. Don't think I will be watching 4k sources in the next few years, and doubt lg will make a full hd set larger than 55"

Gotta stop you here. Almost every single ps4 game is 1080p and 60fps or close. In fact Final Fantasy XIV, the MMO which just came out last year and has critically acclaimed graphics looks every bit as good on the ps4 as it does on pc. If watchdogs is only 900p that's a shame but it is certainly an exception and not the rule. The only other game I know of below 1080 is Battlefield 4 at 900. I'm pretty sure that's it. And these are games made for 5-6 systems, optimization isn't exactly easy. I refuse to buy any sub 1080p games for "next gen" because like you, I think it's unforgivable at this point in time and guarantees aliasing which for me has been the greatest part about ps4 games so far: I don't get any whatsoever. Not to turn this into gamefaqs or anything, but I don't know how xbone owners are comfortable with almost everything still being at 720p on their end. I'd be livid right now if I went that route, and it was close.

I was scared upscaling to 4k would diminish the quality of 1080p ps4 games because the jump to hd from CRT completely broke every previous game. Then someone on the forum informed me that because the jump is evenly divisible with 1080 it shouldn't cause any aliasing. But I still don't regret my decision to stick with 1080 as absolute best case scenario is it'll look the same. It's impossible to pull out any imbedded detail in a video game by upping the resolution, unlike film. I'm certainly a film lover, but a gamer first and foremost and OLED serves my 1080p gaming needs with pure style and grace.

Vegas I appreciate your logic and recanted hatred towards the 4k movement, but I'd like to point out that I can most certainly see a difference between the perceived amount of detail in my 46" compared to 55" at 1080p. The 46" just appears to have more to a discerning eye, though I know it's merely an illusion I'm confident I personally would notice a jump to 4k, in film only, at 55".

I have the PS4 and it looks better on my OLED than it did upconverted on the Sony. Perfect blacks are perfect in any resolution. Contrast and black levels make everything look better .

I agree, for gaming absolutely. That's been my whole push and logic thus far.

But not everyone is a gamer for one, and in regards to film while your statement still stands it's subjective. Some videophiles may prefer the jump in resolution. The problem with buying a tv this year is we had to weigh this delicate balance: more resolution or the current resolution but perfected (ignoring panel issues at least).

Your statement that I was responding to was clearly about 4K, not about OLED.  One is a resolution and the other is a display technology.  Two different things that aren't mutually exclusive.

I really wish we wouldn't so frequently descend into this "4K is too much" abyss of misinformation.  My eyesight is 20/20 left eye and 20/25 right.  Nothing stellar.  I could see a difference in the X900A at 12ish feet.  Sorry, but I'm not alone in this either.  If you need 2 feet or less (or whatever distance you said) upthread, then you were looking at a crummy demo.

Tbh I think psychologically people do this with various new things when difficult decisions are made, most likely unintentionally, because it helps them validate to themselves why they went the route they did. In Vegas' case, at the very beginning when he was steadfastly against 4k he needed this validation to move forward comfortably, confident his money was spent in his best interest when really there was an internal conflict going on. It can be proved by the fact that he then went on to buy a 4k set not 2 weeks later. (Sorry for the psychoanalysis Vegas, don't be mad I had to).

Clearly 4k is better than 1080p. It just is. I doubt anyone is going to say that they'd choose 480p over 1080 because that makes no sense. It's a higher resolution and refusing to accept that is only going to postpone the inevitable: that every tv will be one eventually, including the one in your house, because upping resolution is in absolutely no way stupid. Unfortunately, 4k came rolling out of the door housed in junky technology which still retains every flaw it had when it first came out in 1080. So purchasing a tv this year seeking the best pq came with a very difficult choice, pitting a higher quality image in one respect and a lower quality image in another regardless of which route you took, which renders "grass is greener" type thinking almost an inevitability at some point. Denouncing the rival tech is a protection measure against that sort of thinking.

Yeah but I told my Secretary to buy a tv for the waiting room and she came back with an edge-lit. It's back to the DMV for her biggrin.gif

I don't know about the states but here in the UK most of our cable and sky channels are still in SD sure we have more then ever now but still not the standard and the xbone is looking like it is never going to hit 1080.

out of near 600 channels there are 71 HD channels on Sky in the UK.

I got the feeling the U.S wasn't much better because some times late at night BBC News switches to some U.S news channel that's not even in widescreen.

Most of the popular channels get 1080i counterparts, but most of them are noisy as hell and look like crap.
