I see on the official LG page for this unit that under the title of Downloads and on the Software Updates tab there is a 525 meg file dated March of 2014. Has anyone applied this to their 9800 and or know what has been updated?

Yes, Plague and myself updated back when it was released. If there's no changelog, one can only presume what changes were made. It probably related primarily to the smarthub and associated apps.

Sure, but the small print usually reveals differences in what is and isn't covered and how they reimburse you (i.e. Mack will refund you but only based on a depreciated value...LG will apparently give you a new set after 3 failed repair attempts, but of course this assumes they'll even have a 55" OLED in 1080p or otherwise still available on the market after your set fails the third time; does LG switch you out to an LCD at this point or do they allow you to upgrade to a larger-sized OLED for a nominal fee?).

Fry's price cut was actually before last Saturday, so who knows if this is right? Just thought some who might be considering purchasing might want to know.
I highly doubt this. And even if true, it's a pretty universally known fact of the electronics business that once you establish a price floor, raising the price again by thousands of dollars will only last you so long because you created an expectation. For example, I wouldn't even have come back here to talk about this TV if I hadn't seen the price BB had dropped it to.

Now that I know Fry's had it for 3k, I'm gonna start preparing for someone, Fry's or otherwise to have it for 1999 before the end of the year. That is the price at which I took the leap on the 60ZT60 the first time I had one (a little higher, actually, 2199) and the most I will allow myself to drop on a TV of any kind. I was very skeptical when late in 2013 Speakerphile was talking about the possibility an LG OLED for under 5k by the middle of the year and he was dead on. So I'm willing to wait for it to come down a little more before I bite. Even if I have to go to Indy to get one.

Of course, I just noticed that over on the "Active Topics" sidebar there is a thread about the TC-AX800U series Panasonic LCD (I don't know how old it is) beating the plasma picture levels, and with my viewing habits an LCD would always be the optimal solution. So I guess I'll see what that's about as well.

Just picked one up from SAMs
Got it home, set it up next to my 55st50 plasma and played the 4k robocop(1987) blu ray on both at the same time
It's a better picture for sure, just not sure it's $4k worth of a better picture
Going to try so more content on it

Any changes needed out of box(other than thx mode)?

You got the ST50 for free? I'm using FlatPanelHD's settings with minor adjustments in brightness/contrast. I'm not sure how much of a reference PQ Robocop has...I might suggest trying some more modern film transfers/encodes and make a reassessment. The Dark Knight (Imax shots) would be a worthy contender.

Lol, bought the st50 in 2012 or beginning of 2013
There's no doubt is a better pic, makes the plasma look bland bland and grainy in comparison

Titanfall looked awesome on it
SAMs has a 90 day return policy so I'm going to put some tv watching on it before I decide to return or not

Connection suggestions

I am scheduled to take delivery of my 9800 on Tuesday, but I have been living in a middle 2000's display world for a while.

My NEC has a single DVI and 2 component connections. I currently have 3 sources of content. A Pio Blu-Ray, HD-DVD (remember them?) and the cable HD DVR. My AV receiver is a Yamaha RX-A1000 which is only a few years old. The DVR is connected to the NEC via component and an optical to the A1000. The players both connect to the A1000 via HDMI and then to the NEC on a HDMI to DVI.
So what to do with the 9800, do I run everything directly to it with HDMI? Maybe the Cable DVR to the TV and use the Audio back function and run the players to the receiver and then via HDMI to the TV?

Any suggestions would be helpful!

Yep, I'm kicking myself as I could have saved $1k by pulling the trigger two days earlier

I watched man of steel of blu ray and it was fantastic
Perfect blacks, the space scenes were awesome, first time this tv really popped for me, my plasma looks a little dull after watching the oled for a few hours

Wow these OLED threads move so fast if I don't cone on for a few days I feel like I'm missing something lol. Vak glad to hear things are going well with the new set, everyone is hopping on board so late in the game

Also I don't have that motherboard imprint so it isnt everybody. Though the motherboard imprint when by itself looks favorable to my near black uniformity, which is just a ton of streaks across the middle of the screen.

Also vak I'm curious to know what you do with your darbee with the tv as the only other whose got one. Don't get impatient and skimp on the run in though

Thought ill try using the darbee after calibration on it since the darbee dont mess up any of the calibrators settings. You still using urs?

No lol im not skimping this run in after the 50 first hours ill adjust up contrast n cell light up a step each day 5 up untill ill get up to 80 on the two settingss ,with still using sliders to run on it.
After that ill run other content like full screen hd screen savers n other hd moving dancing ones i downloaded on youtube. Loads of good content there to use.

Yeah I think it's safe to watch full screen content before you're completely done with the run in, but watching a letterboxed movie early caused me some seemingly irreversible damage which I luckily caught in time to stop and revert back to slides. Now, after what must be over 600 hours, I can watch up to 2-3 letterboxed movies safely before worrying about a thing....but the trilogies can still present a problem when viewed succession as they're usually each much longer than the average film.

In regards to the darbee yeah i still use it, it's fantastic. However when I first got it I was very enamoured with it and kept it at 60. After it broke and I exchanged it for a new one I realized I did not like the look of it on 60 anymore. It made the picture look "stressed out", if that makes sense. So I played with it for a few weeks and settled on the exact number of 44 which seems to have no Ill effects and still benefits. There are some sources I wish I could toggle it around for but I refuse to lug around that stupid remote and ever actually change it so I picked the lowest setting I enjoy and use it for everything. I really wish I could program it to my harmony remote though.

BTW lol that grey slide looks damn near excellent, I'm jealous

That to me is a detraction. I understand the way people react to such things, but a couple years ago I bought an Apple bluetooth keyboard as a gift. The thing was $79 and came in what looked like a $20 box. Totally obnoxious and unnecessary. Guys, you pay for that stuff.

Beware the statistical correlations that sound like they're indicative of something. Drowning deaths are tightly correlated to ice cream consumption. In fact, be wary of any statistic that is stated as if it comes with a self-evident conclusion: there is no such thing.

Depends upon where they are, what causes them to appear (on a particular color or any and all colors), and how far back you're sitting.

For me, one dead subpixel is a dealbreaker.

You do make me wonder though: I wonder if people will be dramatically more forgiving of dead subs on the 4K sets.

If its visible when I am viewing a movie, gaming, or television, it's going back
But I'm not going to put slides up to search for them

Although I've never really seen one, I would think it would be obvious on the picture
I'm sitting about 8 feet away from the screen

And who ever said you need to watch this in a completely dark room was right
Not that this tv requires the dark to excel, but it really shows off what it can do
