I tried this and the OLED Light does have an effect on the brightness setting. So with OLED Light set to 50 I was able to set Brightness at 52. The problem is that this doesn't fix anything. Shadow detail is restored but black is now at 0.016 nits, pretty much right back where I started with OLED Light at 25 and Brightness at 56.

As it stands, this display has worse contrast than the last generation of plasmas, assuming blacks are not crushed. I'd love to fix this problem. There is much else about this display that I really like.

I think I remember Vegas OLED mentioned adjusting a black level setting in the advanced settings to remove crush, but also maintain the deep blacks.

Yeah, I believe it was to use the Black Level - High setting then adjust brightness as needed.

Tom that's too bad. I was hoping you would find that the OLED light might not have a linear impact on the low end and BTB section. That way you could find a combination where you set the OLED light very high and reduce brightness to compensate and possibly ending up with a result that mitigates any of the black crush. Of course you'd have a higher peak light output than you were targeting, but ce la vie there's always a trade isn't there?

If I'm not mistaken, Black Level High is for full range RGB. Black Level Low is for limited range. You need to make sure it matches your device's output. You can't calibrate/adjust correctly if you have a mismatch.

For most consumer devices, limited range (e.g. Black Level Low) is the standard output.

I am using sound and vision's settings from their review but cannot access the black level setting to change it from auto to low? black level is the only setting disabled in expert 1?

It is changeable on mine. A lot of items in picture options can be disabled depending on what kind of signal it receives. So, I assume if you connect a device, like PC, who outputs full range signal and it is on Auto, it may disable the black level settings because it already detected the correct signal level for you. Try turn off the video source and change the black level to Low or high instead of Auto. Then power the video source on and see what happens.

This was for the 9300, I do not believe the 9800 has an issue with crushing blacks. I believe LG did this to the 9300 to hide uniformity issues. Uniformity issus that were only an issue if you watch slides all day.

The 9800 is neck and neck with the Samsung oled, both are World Class and amazing. The 9300 would not show a slide at 10 ire (crushed), the 9800 had no problem showing the same slide.

If someone has a 9800 crushing blacks it might be calibrated off from the factory.

That makes sense- I have only been viewing ota as source so far- blacks are fantastic- better than the Kuro 141fd- I will try ps3 as source this weekend and try bd and gaming with hdmi.
