Chad and I put up the AVSHD Dynamic Brightness pattern. ABL was definitely there but the effect was somewhat less than that found on plasmas. That was our subjective opinion. Sorry but I don't have the answer to your question as to why ABL is taking place. It does mean that calibrations will need to be performed with Windows or Window APL patterns.

I'll just take a halfway informed stab and say for the purpose of longevity and stability. Very vague, I know.

Thank you both for replying. I guess we will find out the reason when and if LG decides to be forthcoming.

Well, in Sweden they're selling a totally flat LG 55EA880W OLED looking like a framed canvas. Really amazing effect: http://www.hembiobutiken.se/produkt.asp?pgrpnr=195660 a bit more expensive than the 980 though.

Edit: Better link http://www.lg.com/se/tv/lg-55EA880W

I found this OLED panel on display at Frys Electronics for around $10K. The picture quality was fantastic. The slightly curved screen was not that big of a turn off. I think I prefer a flat screen but I would take curved if they insist on making them that way. The price is out of my budget though.

I wonder what will be at CES in 2014.

^From what I understand, there is the FIXED 77" curved panel, which is seeing release, and the above adjustable curve panel is just a CES prototype. LG needs to stop the madness.

I've taken advantage of the recent price rebate to join the community of OLED owners. I've taken some readings with the set in THX mode. I find the color to be pretty good (for OOTB) but the luminance and gamma are not so good. The "Dummy's guide" that represents my training on calibration doesn't give me any clues on how to deal with this.

My best guess is to reduce green at the middle IRE points and then re-balance red and blue accordingly. Any suggestions?

^ You will have better luck with advice if you post in the calibration section. Identify the calibration equipment you are using.

Those graphs were done in THX mode and I can't see what the settings are (they are all grayed out). But I did another set in one of the ISF modes and made sure that all the "automatic" settings were off. I got the same result.

Are you using apl or window pattern slides and not full screen?
Also, what is contrast, brightness and gamma set to?

I used fullsceeen patterns. I've not read anything to suggest that would be a problem for this set. I made sure the tv didn't dim due to the screen not changing enough.

Contrast is 80. Brightness 50. Gamma setting is 2.2. I've not changed the gamma value yet. With the 60 IRE luminance reading so bad, I figure I need to fix that first.

The set is subjected to ABL, so I would try the smaller patters first. It was also suggested by a review from this site, first paragraph under Calibration.

You were right! I got a good result using windows instead of full screen patterns. I've always used the window patterns on other sets but it was easier for me to position the sensor toward the bottom of the screen so I used the full screen. Shame on me for being lazy.

THX mode is pretty darn good right out of the box.
