Yeah, I'd really like pictures of your grayscale afterwards, but it won't really change anything. What about those people that bought this tv last year, surely their panels must look like crap by now....where are those people?

Unfortunately I'm sure 2014 OLEDS will be out of my price range when they first come out. But I'm not going to keep this tv either if I can't watch some freaking letterbox movies without breaking it. That's just madness. Back to that buyer's remorse I thought I'd moved past.

I can't wait to hear what LG would say if you called them on it. "Durrr that's impossible! Never happened before!" Guaranteed

Vinnie97, one of the kindest, most helpful and respected members here, got one of these. I wonder how much longer before we all get such a message...

LOL.

I don't have anywhere near $8k to drop either...this will have to be my last TV purchase for at least the next 2 years most likely. It will be hard to wait because the ZT60 is a middling dark room performer in comparison to the LG, even with all its warts.

My cam is hideous, but I'll be sure to grab them anyway before I attempt to "wash" it away with slides. It ought to be able to pick up the distinctive lines. wink.gif

Vinnie, thanks so much for all of this.  Plague too.  Helps so many people!

Hey, do you think that you'd "adjust" if you go back to the ZT?  Save the money you spent here and in a couple years hit the 65"/77"ers?

hmm, perhaps? Visual memory can fade over time...the first month would likely be the hardest but since I still watch them concurrently anyway, the sacrifice shouldn't be too great. I'm well beyond the window of return by now, so the only way to rid myself of this hot potato would be via resell (I'm not sure I could raise a loud enough stink with LG to get a refund). Given that it's in the bedroom, it's not the home cinematic centerpiece anyway, so I am still satisfied with being the guinea pig given the PQ benefits.

Burning question might be will OLED ever shake this trait? saying that my samsung s3 shows no sign of burn in at all and its what 2-3 years old.

For the vast majority of folks (who aren't bitten by the gotta-have-it bug), "need to be extremely careful" == "do not buy".  In fact, I cannot imagine getting an expensive device that I have to be so careful with.

And Vinnie was extraordinarily careful.

Seriously, I think the majority of folks are going to regret their purchases incrementally as time goes on.  Why?  Because sooner or later the zero-black thing will become "normal" and no longer "Whoa!", but the IR will remain (or possibly get worse).  And the money you paid for this immature technology will not suddenly drop.

There's regret no matter what direction you take. OLED just represents more expensive regret (with a little sting when you experience these problems firsthand). wink.gif If you've never owned a big screen OLED before (or a tweaked Kuro or Sharp Elite), what you don't know won't hurt you (regret-wise).

I've watched non 16:9 content and haven't seen any lines, but then again I don't look that hard.

Everybody should know the potential pitfalls of this display tech...when I purchased, there was only one owner here, and he was not sharing info on these particular subjects (or at least wasn't seeing anything untoward). Knowing there is an uneven wear issue, continuing to watch as if there isn't one would make for one rather compromised picture over time since this appears to be a cumulative problem.

Yeah, I don't have the 'gotta-have-it bug' - I'll still wait to see what the 2014 generation of 4K OLEDs delivers later this year, but I'm not very optimistic. So without a game changer on the horizon, I see three issues:

  • The pixel lifetime issue
  • The IR/BI issue
  • The absurdly high cost these 4K OLED are expected to cost this year
By 2016 LG will hopefully have addressed these two technical issues (and if not, their entire OLED initiative is likely doomed eek.gif) and the price of these TVs will be 50% or less of what they are commanding today.

So tucking into one of the new low-cost 2014 FALD LED/LCDs just seems like the sensible thing to do until the dust has cleared.

I'd be worried about the 2nd generation of even the very same year model actually solving all these problems.

I'm not trying to talk anyone into or out of this----but I do find it really intriguing: there's a weight placed upon the pain of doing without that seems to exceed the weight of having issues like this that would drive me personally absolutely freakshow nuts.  Are you sure this weighting will stay like this?
