LCD is definitely sub-par compared to plasma, CRT, and OLED, so CNET is correct, IMO. Is LCD a complete load of trash? No, not really. But it certainly is quite sad that it's the dominant display technology.
I don't see how 4k will be a failure. Sure, for most people they won't really see that much of a difference in their home but they sure as hell see it when standing inside a retail store. Couple that with simple marketing "4 times the resolution of 1080p," (everyone knows what that means and it's simple to understand) and people are sold. As soon as the price reaches that $1500 - $2500 sweet spot (which they pretty much already have here in Canada) and there's some actual content to watch, I don't see how anyone looking at a new TV won't pull the trigger.
