I have plans to attend the shootout on Saturday. The Sunday start time is more favorable, but would have made Sunday difficult to navigate for me. So it's Saturday and needing to leave early.

Independent electronics retailer Value Electronics pits top TVs against each other in its tenth annual shootout. The lineup includes LCD, plasma, and OLED panels.

2014 is a year of seismic shifts in the TV industry. It is the year that both Samsung and Panasonic stopped making plasma, and it is the year of the curved screen. It is the year of unexpectedly robust UHD/4K TV sales, and the year that the list price of a major-brand 84-inch UHDTV dropped below $10,000. It's fitting, therefore, that this is also the year that Value Electronics will hold its tenth annual flat-panel shootout.

Although Value Electronics is an independent electronics retailer, its founder—Robert Zohn—expends considerable effort to make sure it is a fair competition. The goal is to bring properly calibrated TVs together for comparison under controlled conditions and to have an audience full of AV enthusiasts vote on what they see.

This year's shootout consists of two all-day events scheduled for August 16 and 17. The event takes place in the Value Electronics showroom, located in Scarsdale, NY. If you are interested in attending, you should contact Robert Zohn and request an application.

Here is the (almost) final list of the TVs that are scheduled to be included in the shootout:

UHD/4K Models

LG 79UB9800 or 84UB9800 LED-edgelit LCD

Samsung UN78HU9000 LED-edgelit LCD

Samsung UN85S9 16:9 or UN105S9W 21:9 LED-FALD LCD

Sony XBR-85X950B LED-FALD LCD

1080p Models:

LG 55EC9300 OLED

Samsung PN64F8500 plasma

Samsung KN55S9C OLED

Possible:

Vizio M652i-B2 1080p LED-FALD LCD

The somewhat Samsung-centric lineup of TVs is not the only star of the show. The event will include presentations from video guru Joe Kane and Dr. Larry Weber, the plasma-TV pioneer. A panel of notable video experts consisting of Kevin Miller, DeWayne Davis, and David Mackenzie calibrate the TVs and otherwise run the show. In addition, a senior engineer or executive from each manufacturer will give a presentation about their company's TVs.

I attended last year's event, and I can attest to the value of comparing calibrated TVs under controlled lighting. I wound up buying the TV that won last year's popular vote—the Samsung PN64F8500. This year, the F8500 makes a return appearance as the only plasma in the lineup, but goes up against an all-new slate of challengers. From full-array backlit LCD to OLED, the latest TVs represent a significant challenge to plasma displays, which have won the majority of previous Value Electronics shootouts. Among the TVs currently on the list, which one do you think will win the popular and expert vote?

Mark (or Robert),

with only a week to go until the shootout now, is there any update on whether the Vizio M Series will be included or not - I just checked the VE website and it still says:

"Likely to be added (final testing next week):
  • Vizio M652i-B2 65" Direct Lit LCD/LED w/local dimming
  • Sharp LC-70UQ17U 70" Edge Lit LCD/LED "

According to that article, the LG 55EC9300 OLED will not launch until the 24th and will be exclusive to BestBuy. So are we to assume that Robert will not have this TV as part of the shootout?
If so, I guess we will have to settle for a battle of 2013 OLEDs.

No, I suspect that Robert will be selling the 55EC9300 but not until after the one-month window of exclusivity LG is giving to Best Buy.

So the only question is likely to be whether the 55EC9300 in the Shootout has been drawn from production inventory Robert has in his warehouse or has been a special delivery LG has arranged for him.

In the past, Robert has been very careful to make the source of the TVs being tested in the shootout very clear when they were not being drawn from commercial inventory, so I expect the same will happen in this case if there is any chance that the 55EC9300 has been cherry-picked by LG.

p.s. just the process of getting a newly-released TV distributed to over 1000 stores nationwide and set up for display will likely take Best Buy more than 8 days from delivery to Best Buy by LG...

I doubt that Robert published his list without making sure that the manufacturers of every model are okay with it, so I would be very surprised if the LG 55EC9300 didn't show up for the shoot-out. Would be a heavy blow.
Many gamers, me included, need to know the input lag for that TV!

Anyways, any news about some kind of livestream? I think I read somewhere that there was one last year or am I just imagining things? Would be great.

It would be excellent news if indeed in fact the 55E9300 is there for the shootout. Check the website for live streaming links.

Robert did confirm that he received the 55ec9300 on another forum, so it will compete, unless something unusual happens.

It was confirmed in this thread as well, otherwise I would have listed it under "Possible" along with the Vizio.

I meant that he received the set today, also noticed him mentioning that he will be getting one more surprise set later this week, so maybe that is the Vizio

Well, there is the Toshiba L9400U (in and then out), the Vizio P (on the cusp of being released), as well as the LG 65EC9700 OLED (also pretty much on the cusp of being released), so this 'surprise' could be any of those - were there any additional details shared on the 'other forum'? Link?

Ya don't think you can post a link, but if you google his full name and 2014 shootout you can find a shootout forum thread associated with the bluray website. There is a picture of the set, which looks pretty sleek, with the new stand.

The surprise could also be the 105 inch samsung that was mentioned in the first post, but considering its size would there be enough room for it?

They have never measured input lag on any of the previous shootouts. You might need to wait for hdtvtest or cnet to get the set.

There must be someone in the audience who is interested in gaming. The more ppl ask, the more likely, though there would also need to be someone with the necessary Leo Bodnar device.

I don't think any of the attendees have asked before (past two years). The question sometimes comes from the audience, but it's not one of the things they really have tested. Remember they have a lot of work on the sets already the calibrations taking hours on multiple sets. With lag testing they would have to take time to have the have/know the best setting of the TV for lag. While they may do it, I just wouldn't expect it until single reviews get done by one of the outlets.

@Ph8te : I understand what you're saying, but measuring the input lag really doesn't take long thanks to the Leo Bodnar tester. It's so simple, it should be the standard equipment of every review and shoot-out IMO.
Oh well, in the end you're right that someone else will provide the information sooner or later, so I won't get on your nerves anymore. Looking forward to the shoot-out.

The vizio m will be there! How confident are you about the Vizio's chances fafrd? You've been in every thread in this forum stating that OLED can't compete with vizio's 2014 lineup and their 16 and 32 zone FALD sets.
