I love Robert, the shootout, and everyone's enthusiasm for it.
But, my Lord, this year's seems almost entirely pointless.
The Samsung OLED has not been manufactured in many months. It may not be "discontinued" in dealer parlance, but it's most certainly discontinued in the sense that it isn't being made. Worse, Samsung has no current plans to even make a successor. I'm not sure testing the soon-to-be-discontinued LG against a soon-to-be-discontinued plasma is all that interesting either.
On the 4K side, we have a few really, really big TVs being brought in. While I get that 4K shines when you go bigger, the entire global volume for all 4 of those TVs is probably under 100K units. For the year. No shootout has even tested so few models anyone will ever be buying anywhere and has drifted so far from mainstream products.
I'm not blaming anyone; I'm just not even slightly sure what the point is.
There's a saying about "everything in moderation". If only it was applied to well, you know...
