The future is flexible, as LG has demonstrated with an OLED screen that can be rolled up and unfurled while displaying a video image.

One of the Holy Grails for TV geeks like me is a flexible electronic screen you can roll up into a tube and take anywhere, eliminating the bulk and weight of even the most svelte but rigid flat-panel TVs of today. LG Display (the manufacturer of video screens for LG Electronics and other companies to use in consumer products) recently demonstrated that the quest for such a screen is a big step closer to fruition with an 18" flexible OLED.

The screen has a resolution of 1200x810—not quite high def, but the pixel count will increase along with the size of the screen. More impressive is the ability to roll up the screen to a radius of 3 cm (1.2 inches) without affecting its operation. This is made possible by using a polyimide film as the backplane instead of conventional plastic. The new film also helps reduce the thickness of the panel, which contributes to its flexibility.

According to a press release from LG Display, the company is confident it will be able to deliver a flexible UHD OLED TV measuring more than 60 inches by 2017. Of course, such a TV will most likely be uber-expensive, as new technologies tend to be—but perhaps rigid OLED TVs will have dropped in price by then.

If you could afford it, would you buy a rollable OLED TV?
