LG 55EA9800 OLED Owner's Poll

There are enough owner's of the LG 55EA9800 OLED that I thought it made sense to poll owner's experience with their Gen-1 sets in advance of the arrival of the Gen 2 products in the coming months.

If you have purchased an LG 55EA9800, thanks to vote according to your experience with the product up to now.

I know there is nothing we can do to prevent trolls voting in the poll, but if everyone who votes posts a reply to the thread summarizing their vote (and any other color they would like to add on their experience), I will do my best to tabulate the true owner's votes.

I couldn't find any dead/stuck pixels or sub pixels using color slides from a foot away. No issues with letter box movies. PQ still WOW's me after several months of ownership. My previous display was a calibrated plasma.

Quick Reference of Forum Rules
1) Do Not post pricing you found on-line or at a local dealer UNLESS IN A DEALS THREAD.
2) Do Not ask for, or offer, a receipt so people can price match.
3) Do Not say to "Call John Smith at ..." (you know what I mean)
4) Do Not put down someone else's choice in...

I have some stuck-pixels that concern me if it continues, still love OLED and will never go back too LCD. Recommend new buyers go with 2nd gen LG to take advantage of any advancements. Samsung OLED are still out there sadly not many owners.

The poll was not intended to imply preference for any technology over any other - just an indication of the quality and reliability of Gen 1 LG OLED from owner's of that set.

If you return your gen-1 OLED for a gen 2 OLED, then you should either vote that you returned if because of problems or you returned it for other reasons (for example, to upgrade to higher framerate or higher brightness).

And also, voting that you returned or are considering returning is not intended to imply in any way that you are negative on OLED or are giving up on it - only that LG has some quality and reliability issues with Gen-1 OLED that make the product unacceptable if not addressed.

Stuck n dead pixels.... more n more on the screen. Decided it was better to return vs having a tv that might not work in year at all.

Appreciate that folks are voting in the poll, but please post as well so we know the votes are genuine and not driven by pro-LG or anti-LG trolls.

At the moment, there are 9 votes out of which 2/3 are problem-free, but there are only 4 responses out of which:

No problem = 1 (Barrybud)
Some problem considering to return (Vegas oled)
Problem TV returned (vakmestern)
Some problem but not serious (5x10)

So based on posts, there are 50% (2 out of 4) no problem or minor problem and 50% serious enough problem to return or consider returning.

I misvoted, didn't really consider the dead pixel an issue but I see where most people would categorize them as one

gotcha - so you voted 'no problems - love the set'

still 50/50 from an overall assessment.

hopefully more of the (many?) 55EA9800 owners or prior owners here on AVS will chime in so that we can get a more meaningful sample...

I can't currently vote do to the fact I currently have a mild case of the Vak Virus which is only a temporary condition that the GEN2 10 bit color panel should soon cure.

If I did not have this condition 3 bad sub-pixels would be a non-issue. On another note my set started resetting again.

Vegas, I assumed you had voted 'Problems developing and am considering to return' (and assumed you had - in fact, I specifically included that voting option with you in mind :-)

The poll was not intended to be a poll of whether owners are positive or negative about OLED but to assess how many Gen-1 55EA9800 OLED owners have had quality and reliability problems sever enough to exchange their sets.

Since Coopson appears to have abandoned this board since he returned his set, I have voted in his place (also because I was getting tired of being asked to vote each time I checked the thread :-)

But so far, the number of owners who have experienced any quality and reliability problems seems to be very low.

On the other hand, the number of owners who have posted following their vote has been very low, so we don't really have the confidence level in all of the happy OLED owners here on the forum that I was hoping for when I created the poll...

It seems that Coopson got a good LG OLED. He wasnt happy with his first unit but his second one is good. In the end that would be a positive experience, a positive vote. I was mistaken, he got a projector.

Add another bad one to the list. From another forum someone posted this pic. Don't think he posted over here, but he will be on his 3rd set if LG replaces again. It seems like the flat ones have less problems. Why can't LG just give me a flat 65" 4K OLED for $2500 already?

I am tired of the inconsistent manufacturing from LG and might pick up a Samsung OLED. I am tired of panel swapping and just want a TV without a bunch of issues. I will say one thing about my last 900B, the uniformity in grey scale was much better than what I have seen on any LG 1st gen OLED.

The above photo is a prime example of this, there is no way this set will ever have an even color temperature on the great scale.

When the color temp shifts this much it effects everything. See the redish coloring, it throw the grey scale off. This is banding but the worst kind and what the set I returned had.

Yes, my XBR8 my sony in the bedroom and a Sharp and LG I later sold. If not for OLED I would have kept my 2nd 900B the first one had bad banding. When you spend thousands of dollars you should get a display without defects. Would you buy a new car with a bad transmission and keep it? The above oled is really bad, I am surprised you cannot see it?

The banding is not the issue it's the color shift, both would get much worse with a 10ire slide.
