"Oct 29 (Reuters) - LG Electronics Inc will look to develop both quantum dot and OLED display technologies for its television business, its chief financial officer said on Wednesday.

Jung Do-hyun told a meeting with analysts that OLED was a superior technology in the long run, although quantum dot technology does provide tangible benefits."

Might this be a subtle signal from LG that they might have to stick with LCD much longer than they had anticipated?

It his use of the words; OLED in the long run, that made me sit up and take notice. That sounds like they are not expecting it to be a big player anytime soon, if ever.

The question is, does OLED survive long enough against the rapidly improving LCD tech like QD and HDR? It is not looking promising at the moment. At the very least OLED looks like it is delayed yet again for a few years until it can compete in the mass market. The only piece of good news is BOE and TCL supposed investment in building OLED capacities at their new factories.

References to 'chicken and egg' seem very apt in this thread, considering all the cries of, 'The sky is falling, the sky is falling!'

What company the size of LG does not hedge its bets when it comes to developing new technology? No matter your confidence in one particular type of developing technology, if you have LG's sorts of resources it would be madness to go all-in on that and not at least keep a foothold in possible emerging alternatives.

Even if OLED proves as viable a tech option as obviously LG believes it is, investing hundreds of millions of dollars, Samsung might still manage to establish the 'Quantum Dot' name in the public consciousness. People could be rushing out seeking inferior Quantum Dot sets, albeit inferior, and LG isn't going to want to be left unable to respond.

Honestly, the eagerness of naysayers to engage in a frothing mouthed impatience-fuelled circle-jerk frenzy of doommongering is growing more than a little weary.

Here is the follow-up article in which Samsung also are turning to quantum dot technology (as it could still be years before OLED is affordable for the mass market). LG said that they are pursuing a dual-track strategy with quantum dot and OLED (analysts regarded that a tacit acknowledgement that OLED needs more time for prices to come down before becoming the new standard).

Another article where the quote was taken out of context and leads the reader to a conclusion that is not what was said. The conference call is available to listen to, the QD discussion is around the 86-88 minute mark. He said about introducing QD TVs, "we do not have any specific plans". He did say that of course they are studying it as they do all technologies. That does not infer they are turning to QD because OLED is years away.
