Anybody seen this one yet? Or know anyone that has? I am dying to find out if this one is too good to be true or not. I know someone on here posted that they had gooten one and were going to post once they had it set up...

I did find out the following "sets feature plasma panels sourced from LG Electronics "
I read that in an article on philly.com when doing a google search for "Dell W4200HD"

I'd say the price has reached a point of being "disruptive", at least for consumer-focused 42" HD sets.

For under 3 G's you get a 42" HD set with HDMI, DVI/HDCP, speakers, stand, integrated HD tuner, free shipping and onsight replacement service.

The ED set, which does not have special promotion pricing right now and does not include the HD tuner or the speakers, seems overpriced in comparison.

Wow!!!
I checked out the Dell web site. That is quite a package. Especially the HD, with speakers, duel tuners, stand (too use until I wall mount)... and free shipping too.
Is the 2300:1 contrast ratio enough these days?
And is the 420 nits picture bright enough?
And do I get the HD over the ED when the price is so close, even though for some time now I'll be watching mostly SD over Dish 508 DVR and DVDs??

The other thing, a ATSC tuner is not a QAM tuner right? I remember that the tuners for OTA and Cable HDTV are differenct. So my concern is that ATSC is solely for OTA HD signal, not for the cable pass through local HDTVs.

In most cases a digital tuner will tune both OTA (8VSB modulation) and cable (QAM modulation). Check the specs to be sure. In this area the only non-encrypted cable channels are the HD broadcast. Everything else be it SD digital or HD is encrypted, so you would need a CableCard to get those.

I would like to see Dell put some downward price pressure on other 42" HD models, which are significantly more than their ED brothers.

Thanks martyj19,
I tried and failed to get any specific information about the digital tuner inside the dell HD set. Guess it is like the Sanyo CRT set, will have both OTA and cable tuner function.

So it looks like a few of you have ordered one. As I type this, the estimated ship date is 2 weeks away if I ordered one right now. Then it's 3-5 day shipping. When are you guys expecting yours to arrive?

My delivery estimate is December 6-8....however going by my past experiences with Dell the reality of ship dates can be way off in either direction.

mirage...anyluck on getting this guy set up yet? :D

I called the Dell number to see if this thing upconverts all inputs to 720p, and if the manual is on-line. The dude I got could barely spell TV, so that was a waste of time.

I called the Dell store in a local mall and they said they would be getting one in on Thursday. Try your local Dell store everyone.

I like this quote from Dell's CEO ..

What would make it successful?
First, I want the prices to come down. I think the key success factor is not how many sizes (Dell offers). I think (it's), "Can we get the 42-inch (plasma TV) product down below $1,000?"

How can you do that?
I think the (screen) manufacturers just need the size, the volume and the time to do it...Those prices will start to move down in the same way that now you can get a flat-panel monitor for $300. Those used to be $2,000.

mirage00,

When you do your review, please comment on:
- Is "only" 2300:1 contrast ratio enough?
- Is 420 nits "bright enough" for daylight and evening
- Whether the inputs are upconverted to 720p.

I know, the first two are subjective.

Thanks.

Peak Brightness 700 cd/m2

Do you guys think Dell will keep or drop the price further over the next few months? With the holidays coming up, I can't come up with the money to buy this now. I'm hoping to save up enough for by late Dec or early Jan...

Hi mfan,
The price could go up a little bit in a short term if Dell decided to pull the discount. But over a long period the pricer certainly will go lower. Let's say that you can be sure to find a similar or better deal if you wait 3 months or longer...
