Since I raised your concern, I'll knock you off. In fact, I just knocked myself off.

After wringing my hands for 2 weeks over the 50 vs. 500, I went ahead and got the 50 today.

I never used PIP on my old TV. The other features I'll live without too. And I save some money and tax. The 50 is going to be great. I'm glad I made a choice. Now I can actually do something besides surfing this forum.

Thanks to many posters in this thread who wrote such clear explanations of the relative advantages/disadvantages of purchasing a PX50u or waiting for the PX500u models. Also thanks for answering what I now see were pretty elementary questions (I am the one who began my questions with "Duh..."). FWIW, the primary reasons for my decision were as follows (and not necessarilly in order of importance):

1. The known differences between the two models are not all that important to me.

2. The PX50u is available today. The PX500u may be available next month. (Time's a wasting! A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush! Here today and gone tomorrow! etc. etc. I turned 68 last month and I'm not waiting for "nothing I want/need any longer!" I expect this reason is as valid for one 28 yrs old as it is for me.) ;)

3. The local (Deerfield Beach, FL) B&M has great markdowns on the PX50u models. Send me an email if you're interested in the details of my purchase.

4. Finally, I was returning home yesterday from getting my bi-annual haircut and I said to myself, "Hey! I just got a haircut! Why not get the 42PX50u Panny today too?!" This makes as much sense to me today as it did yesterday which is substantial (female viewers may not see the subtleties of the logic but most guys will agree it's impeccable)!

Anyway, you're not likely to hear this list reported by David Letterman so I thought I'd post it.

Thanks again,

Allan

Great post Allen! And Larry Larry I'm down off the fence too. So that makes THREE of us, I pulled the trigger about an hour ago on the 50PX50U! And this buyer is 54 and TOTALLY agrees with reason #2. As to your logic for #4 it truly is impeccable. I think I'd add a #5 ...

5. Because I could (smiles)!

Finally, to all that helped make the decision more educated ... a HUGE HIGH FIVE to you all. You have added valuable input and THANKS.

Well I did pull the trigger, but not at that place. So I thought I'd post some advice that could be helpful for some. I found a site called ResellerRatings and found it extremely valuable. The first FIVE lowest prices had incredibly LOW ratings. It got me thinking about the SCAM/"Bait & Switch" aspects that I did a great deal more looking at sellers. After a more searching I found a place ($400 more) that I really was comfortable dealing with. Now I feel much more confident in such a large investment. I thought I should add something, after taking so much advice.

I was watching the San Antonio Spurs defeat Phoenix this afternoon & saw a new Panny plasma commercial. It's storyline is "Life is Color", and at the end it showed what appeared to be a PX500. Were getting close!

I'm fairly new to the site, but I have to say, this site has been crucial in helping me uncover great data and content on plasmas. It's been a long road for me, but I'm finally here(since January). After scouring these threads, I have painstakingly made my decision and FINALLY chosen the right pdp for me, the px500.

I started my research with the 7UY's and their pro's and con's; they're great for customizing and seem to have a pretty decent picture, but have been known to overdo the black sometimes, no tuner and all perks are extra. So I moved on to the px50's, they too have their drawbacks including their ugly design(of course that's my opinion), green hue that folks are writing in about, no program guide, no PC input, and no PIP to name a few.

So then a light bulb went off, why not shell out a few more bones for the px500? It seems to have all of the other features that the other two, either don't come with out of the box(7UY) or don't have at all(PX50)! Granted it's spanking new and could have some bugs, but at it's price(gross assumption on my part) it seriously seems as though their looking to make up for the px50's shortcomings FAST! I can't imagine panny would put out a new model that quickly that doesn't have an equal or better picture. The actual few reviews that I did find on the px500 have all been great. So for online pricing under $3,500, I'm gonna take the leap of faith.

I should be placing my order this week and will report back.

I can't remember, sorry. As far as the PX500's being "out online", no. Those shady places will take your money now, and ship it you who knows when. When they are actually shipping, you will read it here at AVS first.

Yup, Patrick, a sucker born every minute.

All: listen to Patrick.

There is no difference in HDMI cables. If you can see the picture without visible dropouts or sparklies, the cable is working at 100%. No other cable will display a better version of that picture. You're simply wrong if you think there is a better digital cable than one that is already working. (Oh, and plasma didn't die because of logistics problems, nor does OLED ship in big boxes because it comes from Korea.)

The 25u's were not removeable, nor are the 50's, and from the pics I've seen (and specs), the 500 are not either. If you need optional/removeable speakers in Panasonic, Onyx or 7UY are your options as far as I know.

I think Carson used to do that with his "Amazing Karnak" or some such thing...hold the envelope up to your head, and take your best guess. I've heard anywhere from .5-2.5 months.

wrong. There is no "official" release date, but the press release from a few months ago said "june", and so far panasonic has kept in line with the press release, with the panel's coming out towards the end of the month they stated.

dontdothat88,

That's what I'm asking? Any press release direct from panny quoting a release date of some kind is as "official" as you're gonna get in my opinion! Where did you see that? Can you refer me to it?

I found this from their JP site, but it refers to a May release date in Japan only! http://www.panasonic.co.jp/corp/news...n050406-9.html

Does anyone know of an on-line dealer that has the PX500U in stock? I have verified that several of the on-line stores do not have it yet even though they show "yes" as in stock.

If noone currently has them, what is the official release date from Panny.

Do you know for certain that the USA PX500 models aren't?

I can't tell from the few photos I've seen exactly what the logo reads.

It mentions an HDMI connection in the product description copy: "With the easy to use HDMI connection, HD pictures can be displayed on the 42 inch screen, whether this be from a high definition DVD source or HD television broadcast, producing the most vivid colours ever experienced on a VIERA. With the announcement from BSkyB that they are planning to go live with HD broadcast in 2006, the PV500 series looks set to be the most rewarding purchase you can make this year."

Kurt,

Great question! I JUST had the same one a couple of days back and have gotten the run around from everyone! So I took it upon myself to call panny myself! The customer service Rep told me june/july. But he didn't seem so confident in his response, so not even sure if he actually knew!

From what I can gather(in all of my lat night obsessive online research), it'll be sometime in june. For whatever reason, they don't give out an "official" date for release. Retarded IMO!

I NEED MY PX500 NOW, but I can wait a week or two!!!! No point in buying a sub-par px50, no offense to the px50 owners! ;)
