Hack a UTV?

Hi all,

I dug up an old UltimateTV receiver (circa 2001) and found a recording on it from 2004 that i would like to copy onto my computer. The problem is that without a subscription to the UltimateTV service, you can only watch the first 10 minutes of any show you had recorded. A bigger problem is that Microsoft disabled the UltimateTV service in 2013 (according to DirectTV).

Anyone know of a way to hack this box so I can watch more than 10 minutes of a recording?

Thanks!

Microsoft shut down MSN TV/WebTV which was the way these boxes connected to the web.. There are still users out there on UltamateTV
There may have been ways to get into the drives, don't know for sure. It was hard enough just to swap drives,

Always ready to pull the lever on that La-Z-Boy.

It sure would have been nice if they would have provided a way to unlock the recordings when they disabled the service. I was hoping there was a software update to the boxes that would do that.

Oh well - guess I can remove the disk and try to get to the recordings directly.

Thanks

Have you tried just inserting an active directv access card from another receiver? UTV doesn't use an RID so to activate it just insert any active access card from another receiver and resend authorization via directv website to that receiver. It will definitely activate the box for directv service but watching the recording idano, it may or may not work but maybe worth a shot.
