I just acquired a dish 5000 receiver with virgin rom3 card all refurb in the box.I also have a HDTV modulator for the unit also new.I have directv right now and don't really need another dish and don't really plan on taping any HD movies. So I was wondering what this combo would bring on ebay or somewhere else..I have seen some ridicules pricing for some of these.Just trying to get the true value. Thanks Gregg

What ever the market will bear. But I'd say $1000 - $1200.

I'll buy the combo from you from $550, I just got a Hipix and would
love to tape HBO and Showtime, but I'm kinda broke right now.

Unless you'll take "6 months same as cash" :D

I just paid $1099 on ebay. I have seen them go for more. I would suggest you list it on ebay for that.

I once sold the modulator alone for $700. Now anyone can get the 5000 receiver for $150 at dishdepot.com

Good luck. As you know, Dish and Direct are merging, and when they change, they will implement new HDCP technology which will *highly probably* make your combo defunct. I doubt they will give you a good offer for exchange. So your unit is good for one year. Sell it now.

Total speculation. You don't know what they will or will not do. Besides the merger will probably not go through anyway and if they do this they will also impact all the owners of 6000 receivers.

Looks to me like the D* E* deal and the Comcast AT&T deals will both go through. But it will be a fight for both of them.

I guess I'm happy now that I lost the bid last night for $1.50 (701.50 total). Still have a 5000 sitting idle. I guess I'll be happy with my W-VHS until there is a rational STB/HDVHS compatible units. Where's JVC or where is the 1394 board for the Dish 6000 to make it work?

Very easily. Find a Model 5000 receiver and HDTV modulator and a Hipix card.

that's incredible, I thought that the DirectTV and DTC100 with the 169time mod to it are the only was to records HDTV directly (in pure HDTV, not through the stand def down conv.)
thank you.
I see that the mod 5000 + HDTV modulator are expensive.
are there any complications that I should know about beforehand?
Any places (cheap) you'd recommned to buy from?

Can I view the files created from the hipix card on another computer without a hipix card in it?

you can only view hipix files with a hipix card.

some ppl are working on away to convert hipix files to 1280X720
divx files easily, but it will be awhile before its an easy prosess.

There are some software players that can
play HiPix files...
Elecard & Ravisent Cineplayer DTV for example.

Problems though:

1> They only play in realtime on very high end
hardware.
2> They only play one file at a time, so you
would have to "join" a bunch of HiPix minute
files together before you could watch them
continuosly.

The 169time mod does not let you record DirecTV HDTV, at least not yet. It will let you record your local OTA DTV stations.

The Dish 5000 w/HD Modulator will let you record Dish HDTV, if you have the rest of the right equipment. You must also have a way to acquire & store the data, like with a PC & HiPix card or a Panasonic TU-DST50/51 DTV tuner & PV-HD1000 DVHS VCR. The Panasonic equipment, along with the Dish 5000 & HD Modulator are all discontinued products. You can keep an eye on the AVS Classified Ads & Auctions, and also eBay. But that's about it.

And due to the rarity of the equipment, it's not cheap. The 5000 can be had for $300-$500, the HD Modulator starts at about $700 and goes up. A guess at the high water mark is around $2000 for the pair.

There are other DVHS recorders on the market, but the functionality with the Dish 5000 is uncertain.

The 169 product can either record OTA or the Dish 5000 modulator output which can be HBO, SHO or CBS HD.

I think to clarify, the Dish modulator makes the Dish signal into an OTA signal by converting it to an 8VSB signal, therefore any device that can record an OTA signal can record the signal coming out of a modulator, so there is nothing special that the 169 product does to record the modulator signal, it simply thinks correctly that the modulator signal is an OTA signal.

IS the $150 dish 5000 receiver the same one that will work with the modulator . it says on the web site that it is the "Original 5000 model" if that means anything.
also is the echostar brand the same thing?

How about a 5000/mod and an AccessDTV card? I thought I'd read that the AccessDTV was a better choice than the HiPix.
