DISH (Echostar)

Tech demo on the path to the 921 was impressive indeed. Appears much of the dev work is complete, being done in England with a complex emulation of the sat feed - no Dish there. Playback of HD at various speeds is stunning (and not canned, they were using the feed that other HD displays at the show were using). Picture was, needless to say, GREAT. Demo used an 80GB disk, but shipping unit will have a 160GMB for 10-12 hours of programming. Two HD tuners. OTA included, no separate 8VSB module required. Also supports archiving off to DVHS tape (not specifically demonstrated). Interface will be a combo of OpenTV and proprietary extensions but better looking than 6000. Mentioned end of year availability but no definite dates. Tech team very open (and evidently but no clue on marketing, new channels, etc.

No news on upgrades to the 6000 to support HD VCR recoding (like a DVI or Firewire card).

If Moxi is in the 921 future I am sure it will only slow up the product introduction. I would much prefer they ship what they showed at CES ASAP.

721 (and optional keyboard) said to be coming in 3rd QTR of the year. Dish 508 is the Dish 501 with an 80MB drive.

Implies the promised 1394 connection. Any sign of the DVI/HDCP output?

Mike,

Unfortunately the proto was "behind the curtain" like the wizard of Oz, and this function was not specifuically demonstrated. I was not left with the impression that the 6000 would be upgraded to connect (despite menu option in software).

SWEET!!!!

If this works the way you say it will then in theory we might be able to finlly archive HBO and showtime. If not directly from the box, then we can connect a Dish 5000 with an 8vsb modle up to it and do it that way. Can't wait till it arrives.
