The DVR going to sleep is an energy saving feature I am on Suddenlink and it would happen at 1:00 AM ( I am always up then). You just have to call them and tell them to turn that feature off, they have to send some kind of signal to the box.

Now not all of the employees know about it. I got it done a long time ago with a box, but now I have gotten another one and had it replaced twice each time having to call. The last time the person didn't know this happened and didn't know how to fix it and said you couldn't (as this was the third time I knew it could be done, I believe it was in the online owners manually of my box the first time I needed it done and that's how I found out) had to finally get them to get there supervisor and they knew exactly what to do.

The only problem I have now is at 3:00 AM the screen flashes (I believe only on my 8300 HDC DVR) and if you are watching a recording it pauses, annoying and they don't know why it happens and don't fell like spending the time to get them to figure it out. I cant remember if I have recorded anything during the time it would happen but I know if it starts or ends at 3:00 AM it doesn't affect anything.

Hey all.... I'm not sure if anyone is still following this thread but I wanted to add a couple things....first....the whole "saving hard drive life" is total bull crap since I have both a Scientific Atlanta TWC DVR - and - the same brand cable box that DOES NOT have a hard drive at all! Both units have the same pointless "press any key to keep watching what your paying for" stupid message!

Numerous calls to TWC do nothing except waste time! They all play stupid like there's a problem at my side or with the boxes! One looser blamed my TV for showing that message!! Uhhh same stupid messages on both a Sony LCD and a LG LCD?!?! Now present on two Sony LED 3D TVs??!?! Yeah sure!

I even saw the same issue at a local TWC payment/services building! I questioned the reps there but they said one of their boxes was messed up and it overheated! Wow....are they instructed to be THAT stupid?!?

Anyhow...I agree with one users post.... It's all about bandwidth! The boxes never really go into a power save mode since they still both generate the same crazy amounts of heat as if they were showing a freaking picture! They was I see it.... If they boxes go into a mode stopping you from seeing what you pay for, you should be credited for the down time in between (of course that will never happen)

So......a fix in theory!!! I'm not sure if this exists or how difficult would it be to build an infra red emitter that sends a command every 30 minutes or so to emulate someones presence. I have found there are commands that will keep the box on without effecting the screen (like pressing the A button) so if anyone has any ideas on this, please post a reply!

Lately I've also been see the "press any button to continue watching this channel" message pop up. That's annoying enough while watching live TV, but it makes any kind of unattended recording impossible. Those looking to get around this with a separate recorder (VCR, DVR, PC) are in for a rude surprise, that won't fix it.

I record to a PC connected to an TV output of my 4250HDC and lost the last 5 laps of a close car race. Very frustrating. I chatted with TWC tech support and was ultimately told that they don't support recording to any external devices. (And apparently not to their own DVR boxes either.)

I also had the idea that a simple IR device to simulate a harmless key, say the exit key, on the remote every few minutes would be the workaround. Anybody see something like that?

They have a federal obligation to allow recording to a DVHS Digital VCR via FireWire connection on the cable box.

That's just the way their software handles SDV.

You are not the only one! I like to leave my tv on a certain channel each night to keep "good vibes" coming in...but like clockwork every night the tv goes off even tho I have turned the sleep timer to off. Very frustrating. My sister has Direct tv and hers does the same thing....I thinks its the long arm of the gvmt myself along with the fruity people that think we are going to run out of electricty in a couple of years.I don't really see that there is anything that can be done about it.

Your TV is shutting itself off in the middle of the early morning without anything instructing it to do so? Uh huh...

What is the TV's model number?
