I saw an auction on eBay where the seller claims that you can use the dish network hdtv modulator (yeah that one) and connect it to a DTC-100 rigged with the 169 mod to record it with hipix?

does this seem possible because doesn't the Dish 5000 and modulator have a propriety (high speed) connection, whereas the modded dtc-100 is firewire.

Also btw: at this time what good is the firewire port on the modded dtc-100?
In short I'd like to record DirecTv to a hipix card? What ways are there to do this?

Beware of any such claims on eBay...
It sounds like BS or a big misunderstanding
to me.

As far as I know the only way to record
HDnet would be to have a DTC-100 RGB out
go through a format converter (RGB->YPrPb)
and then to a W-VHS VCR.

169time.com has been said to be working on
a future version of the firewire card that
would allow recording HDnet to D-VHS VCRs
but I don't think they have anything working (yet).

The Dish modulator connects to a special
high speed dataport on the back of a Dish 5000
receiver. There would be no reasonable way
to connect a 169time firewire port into the
Dish modulator.

The 169time firewire port (currently) only
passes OTA DTC-100 signals.

Here is one configuration that would work
(and could possibly be what the seller
was describing):

Dish5000->Modulator->DTC100 OTA antenna input->169time firewiremod -> D-VHS VCR.

That would allow you to record dish to
D-VHS, but no where does this let you do
anything (other than watch) HDnet.

Another thing that 169time does is to modify
Unity Motion receivers (big dish) so that they
have firewire to D-VHS decks. It is said that
some HDnet uplinks show up on the big dish
satellites so some people may have recorded
some HDnet live uplinked programs (like sports).

Still another thing I heard about is some
people trying to modify DirecTiVos to be able
to capture the HDnet datastream. That sounds
like a big project but maybe it is possible
(even if you couldn't decode/view the HDTV
with the current crop of DirecTiVo receivers).

Basically the HiPix is good for recording
ATSC OTA or Dish5000 modulator output...
Thats it.
