Understand this combo works.

Any pointers on use?
How do folks archive off the computer?

Thanks,
Tim

Wow. I guess the HD Recording forum isn't the only HD recording forum. Maybe we need an HDHTPC forum here. Great info, but mostly dated in the Jul 01 timeframe assumably related to the release of hardware. Will need to get me a HiPix and kick the tires. DVtransfer, DVspool, it's a whole new world. Dish 921 come out before I have entered the abyss.

rudolpht ,

Not many pointers necessary. Plug in the hardware, run an RG6 from the modulator to the Hipix, install the software, and click the red button:)

Unless you are poverty stricken, avoid the camcorder backup solution for archiving. Use hard drives, DVD-R, or RW.

You can also use DDS-3 and DDS-4 DAT tapes for archival. If you use Win9x, you can play back directly from tape just like a VCR.

You can get Maxtor 120 GB 5400 rpm HDD for about $215 and an IDE removable drive bay for around $15 it requires a reboot to use. Should be about 13-14 hours of recording. For me it seems like the most hassle free solution.

80 gig drives have the best $/Gig ratio. In the HTPC section there is a thread re: software to allow hotswapping IDE drives without a reboot. It works. Free demo. 19.95 or something to buy.

Read through about a dozen threads. All I can say is you folks are sharp, helpful, and have heavy-duty (i.e., interesting) debates. I learned a lot already. I was going to upgrade, but I'll probably fit out a new HTPC with a HiPix, Radeon 8500DV, and I'll keep looking for the best S/W drivers, utilities, etc. Assume I'll need to get an Audio Authority to go VGA D-Sub to component (had one back in the DTC-100 "early days").

Thanks,
Tim

No, you don't need one of those with the HiPix. The HiPix will output RGBHV in VGA format or YpBpR using the RGB cables of a VGA breakout cable. G=Y, R-pR, B=pB. This is menu slectable. The HiPix can alternate with the computer's VGA display using a jumper cable supplied or the computer can operate with it's own VGA monitor using the HiPix only for HDTV.

Note that the HiPix does not replace your VGA card. You still need that for the computer to operate. Likewise the HiPix cannot be used as the VGA card either. It only outputs the HDTV analog signals. All the one monitor solution does is to switch the VGA card's signal out the HiPix output cable.

The HiPix does not get along with other capture cards either. For example I tried to include a Hauppauge PVR card with the HiPix for SDTV recording - couldn't be done.

Otherwise it's a great product. I have had one since the first 50 went out a year ago.

Not sure of what incompatibilities you experienced with your Hipix/Wintv combo but I havent had any problems yet with my Hipix/iomagic combo thus far. Recording with the Hipix works fine although I admit I use my iomagic card only with Dscaler. I guess I could load up PowerVCR and see if there were any incompatibilities using it to record.

I've only had my Hipx for a short while but the pq is outstanding.
