I have a 2 tuner Premier series 4 with OTA only. I cannot get my PC to show up in the Tivo in order to transfer shows to the Tivo. I can easily access the Tivo from the PC. Both are on the same network. I have tried re-booting PC, Tivo, router, etc. all to no avail.

I had the same issue when the PC went to sleep. Sometimes the TiVo could find it afterwards, sometimes not. Rebooting the PC usually solved the problem, but then I found that simply pausing the Desktop server for a few moments, then resuming it worked. Now I just leave the PC on 24/7 and that, of course, also solves the problem.
I guess you need to have TiVo desktop installed on your computer for this to work. I did not get around to installing it yet so my computer doe not see my TiVo's.
My Netgear WNDR 4300 router has a feature that works with TiVo. I have my external 1TB HP drive hooked by USB to my router and both my TiVo's can see the drive when I enable the feature in my router. I can transfer videos from the drive to the TiVo's but I can not transfer any videos to the drive from the TiVo's. Do I need a specific external drive to increase storage capacity of my TiVo's and does it have to be hooked directly to the TiVo or can it exist on my home network?
I believe that I read somewhere that the TiVo's will record only to the internal drive, not to a drive connected via usb to the TiVo. But I have no first-hand experience with this.
If you load the Tivo desktop software you can transfer from the TiVo to your computer, but the transfer must be initiated at the computer end. The free version is no longer available from TiVo, but I can put it on my webspace if you need it.
You probably won't be able to transfer from the TiVo to your router/drive, since the transfer must be initiated at the receiving end not the source end. Even "between TiVo's", the transfer must be initiated at the receiving TiVo.

You are correct in that the only external drive supported is the eSATA WD My Book. I used one for a while but there was a problem with finding it sometimes. I decided to go the Desktop route. My unit is an older Premiere. There are other TiVo friendly programs like kmttg. My WNDR4000 also has a USB drive that can be accessed as a DNLA server but the TiVo doesn't see it. My TV and Blu-ray see it.
I use the Desktop program on my my Win7 laptop and store programs on a WD FreeAgent 1TB drive. I have about 99% success and the transfer rate is about 3:1. Or, a 1 hour 1080i program takes about 20 minutes.
I have TiVo Desktop running 24x7 on my media-PC. While it is true that TiVo --> PC transfers have to be initiated at the PC, you can set up auto-transfers in TiVo Desktop so that a series episode will start to transfer to the PC on its own as soon as it finishes recording. You can check that it has completed transfer from the TiVo then delete the copy on the TiVo. I do this for series that I don't want to watch during the season but would rather collect the season and watch as a block with no delays or 3 month hiatus in the middle of the season. I'm doing that with Under The Dome now.

Thanks. I did manage to do some transfers between the two Tivo's. I did find out that the Welcome to TiVo video that you get when you first hook up your TiVo will not transfer. I figure I would use that as a test file but its a no go.

Joe, is your drive hooked to your laptop or your router and could you transfer from the TiVo right to your external drive or do you have to transfer it to your laptop first?

The drive is connected to the laptop like any other USB drive. The Desktop lets you specify where to store the files, so they go right to the USB drive. I have learned that Desktop will revert to its default storage location if I remove the external drive and reboot the laptop. Like was posted, it's a simple server program and at the right price. The kmttg program does much more and I only use it to check the bit rate of recorded show. The router doesn't have any USB device connected but still shows up as an audio & video source. I could turn off the feature but it's not hurting anything. Neither my laptop or desktop have WMP running. I sometimes enable it on the desktop to copy or backup a CD. The Blu-ray does a really good job and I like to keep things simple. I'm not big on keeping my eggs in one basket.
Observing the network activity, the slowest part is moving data from the TiVo to the laptop. Tivo is wireless N and the laptop is on the switch at 100mbs. It's an old laptop that I upgraded from Vista to Win7.

Thanks Joe. I just spent the last hour looking for where I stored the free version of TiVo desktop on my computer. I had a folder specifically set up for all TiVo info but the desktop wasn't there. I finally found it as I left it in the download folder on both of my computers. Duh!
I wonder if I can have TiVo desktop running at the same time on two computers?

Here's a funny story. My sister "let" me cleanup her laptop yesterday. She goes to various fast food places for wifi since she will be going back to FL soon. I found that the bar across the street has free wifi (g). It's only on when they are open. Win7 shows a speed of 1mbs. I guess after a few beers you can't tell how slow that is.

Nothing like a back up internet connection if yours goes down. I wonder if they monitor who is on their internet. I do not have my wireless set up in my netgear router as I have hard wired internet through out my home. The netgear we let me see if anybody is accessing my wifi if it is turned on and will let me block them. I guess the name on their internet is Linksys?
Forgot to mention I got TiVo desktop running on my back up computer. So far all is good. I have to start up my external drive again and see if I can access it for storage through my router.

Nope. SSID is "Dorkos". I get a pretty good signal. I do get a few others. One must be my neighbor since it is a strong signal. No, I don't have my guest account active or use WEP.
There may be info on using the Netgear with a TiVo on the Netgear website.
Hello all, I am new to these forums. I just purchased a tivo premier series4. I had a trial offer with the subscription but about a week later I cancelled. The only options I am interested in using is the recording to dvr function. I figured paying 15.00 montly was just too much for just having the ability to record so I canceled the subscription. After cancellation, I decided to do a test record to see if I could manully record without the subscription. It turns out its letting me do this. I don't know if this is just temporay or not. I just canceled today and the csr for tivo said the cancellation is immediate. To anyone that has a series 4 premier, has anyone tried to record shows without a subscription and how well did it go?? When I first got the subscription, another csr for tivo said there was absolutely no way to record (even manually) without a subscription.

Another question I have is, without being hooked up to the internet, will the clock slowly drift off?? Or if I have to unplug the tivi for any length of time, will the clcok be wrong??
Once the TiVo realises that it no longer has a subscription, it should disable your ability to record completely. It doesn't matter whether the clock is correct; cancelling the service turns your TiVo into a glorified tuner/doorstop whose only feature is the ability to pause live TV (IIRC). Only series 1 (and 2?) TiVos allow VCR-style operation without a subscription.
