Standard firewire cables are limited to 4.5 meters (about 15 feet). I have read that there are longer - up to 10 meters - firewire cables using 24AWG for the signal wires instead of the usual 28AWG.

Does any one know who might manufacture these longer cables?

As an alternative are low cost converters available which translate from firewire to CAT5 and vice versa?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Try markertek.com, search for extended firewire cable, they sell lengths up to 70 feet. Not sure how well they work, but it's worth a try.

www.markertek.com/MTStore/Store.cfm?Search=extended+firewire

If you end up buying the cable, let us know if it works out.

Forgot to add, you can also try www.granitedigital.com for longer cables. These are probably top of the line cables from a very respectible company. I've dealt with them in past for SCSI stuff and everything they had was top notch!

Thanks for youir leads. I haven't yet decided on my system planning, but if I do buy extended length firewire cables, I'll post my opinions here.

Incidentally, I also found some here:

About two years ago I purchased a 70-foot 1394 cable from www.bhphotovideo.com in New York City. It cost me $99 is working very well to transmit stereo and S-video signals converted in my living room by analog-to-DV transcoder made by Sony. The 70-foot cable transmits the DV data to my office 70 feet away to be captured by an 1394 ubterface card in my computer. My cable is 6-4, but B&H also has 6-6 cables.
