Can you access a recording in Windows when the HHD is formatted ex2?? Will something like VideoReDo be able to work with the recording?

DVR's/PVR's (whichever you want to call them), if not rented through a content provider CATV or Satellite, are at a unfortunate disadvantage as it it. Designing this w/o an internal HDD makes it far worse and limits their customer base. I don't understand why they don't see this.

I am current using an Echostar designed Sat Receiver unit (sold by Bell Canada) which has a similar feature that allows the user to add an USB based external HDD to turn this receiver into a DVR/PVR for all the recordings and pausing etc functions, which I did. In the two years that I have owned it, I only lost one recording. (I am recording about 3 programs per day) The only issue that I have with it is that I believe the HDD power management is not as good as it could be with an internal drive (read waste of power) , but from a user interface, usage and reliability perspective it is as good as one would expect from such a unit. If the EPvision unit is as good as the Echostar, I will be more than happy.

Echostar uses a proprietary format where the video can only be read by the same unit that recorded it.

FWIW, I received this yesterday (truncated);

Hi Bruce,

Thanks for your email today and this one!
Regarding your questions:

We actually are not just some engineers doing our designs in the oversea location by ourselves. In fact, all our key engineers worked for US design firms, US side TV manufacturers and EPG companies for many years (10 years+ at least). We are really good what we are.
Again, many thanks for your comments and even for today’s email.

They told me it would ship in 1-2 months @$249. Pre-register now for promo discount. Not sure if that quoted price includes the discount, but either way, that is a very reasonable price for what will hopefully be a decent product. I was interested in the CM7400, but it is about $100 beyond my budget and supposedly suffers too many problematic issues. Will probably give epVision a try instead.

I will too. I left another promo request. Once a year should be enough.

Hi Videobruce. I'm new to the forum and just catching up on all of the posts. I will contact the company to put in my 2 cents. I don't want to seem too picky but felt compelled to point out to you that you always address the engineer as Allan and he always replies Allen.

Any news? Doesn't look so good for the PViX or CM-7400 unless you have good PSIP data. Each has good features, but I think they won't make it with your average consumer.

I just received an email from the sales@epvision after I did the promo request yesterday.

I asked if there was a manual out yet for this recorder to view they told me no but there would be one before its release.

They also said it is the phd-vrx full hd1080p dual tuner digital HDTV recorder, receiver & media box. In q1 2012

It sounds interesting, at one time I was leaning toward one of their set top boxes (205? I think) then the 7400 came out with the dvr and I tried and liked it

The vrx sounds promising can't wait for the reviews and maybe buying one

I wish I could test one of these units for them at a deep discount

I hope it has a very good tuner that is not overly sensitive to amplification and overload. TheCM-7400 is very problematic in this regard, and very aggravating, as certain distant channels require the use of a preamp. I have never had this sort of problem with LG, Samsung, or Panasonic tuners.

Amps & especially preamps are subject to overload.

Sounds like either the tuner isn't as sensitive, or it doesn't have as good of a error detection/compensation of the others.
Do you have close, local stations that might be overloading your preamp (assuming you are using one)?

Looks like the web site for support of the BV-980H has died. Any news on the PHD-VRX?

I said "support", as in forum for help:

It used to have tips, wishlist and other stuff.

I just talked to Allen. He says they were expecting to ship the unit by end-February, but that is not going to happen. A more realistic ship-date is mid-March.

I will keep my fingers crossed.

Crazy, was reading through the 101/200/205 thread and realized that Bruce talked to Allen almost 5 years ago about their new DVR:

Not having a product release is better than releasing a bad product then making it an orphan. Check the BV-980H.

Choices for a HD DVR are small. Someday.....

It has been "produced", just not released yet.

Without going into specifics, the holdup is a specific software/firmware issue they are having. They don't want to release it until it is solved.
Allen didn't mention exactly what it was and no date was discussed either.

He also stated about additional features being added after the first product release.
