Hey all,

My father in law recently switched to DirecTV and the rep told him that it would be easy to use his 1TB external USB hard drive with the unit. He was told to buy an esata to USB cable (which he did) and use that to hook the hard drive up to the box.

He powered off the HR21, hooked up the hard drive and then powered up the hard drive. Finally, booting up the HR21. Unfortunately, nothing happened. The hard drive activity light flashed briefly but then turned off and stayed off.

Any suggestions?

Dump the eSATA to USB cable and connect using the eSATA connector on the back.

The problem resides in that the "rep" did not know what he was talking about. You actually, need a Hard drive with a Case that has an ESATA connection and then connect this (Esata to Esata cable) to the Esata input at the D* TV DVR. Then "boot" both.

Cheers

Thanks for the help guys. I'm surprised the esata to usb cable didn't work, I'd assume it's doing the same thing as an external enclosure with esata. However, I'll pick him up one of the recommended enclosures and pull the seagate hard drive out of it's stock enclosure to put in the new one.

Thanks again for the info!
