Do they make a device that will record ota HDTV? I am not looking for a HTPC or some pc/ mac with windows type media center that need i would need to buildto. Ideally it would be something like TiVo with no cable required, with built in tuner(s) and no monthly fee.

Just so you know, you can pay a set price for a TiVo with a lifetime fee upfront, and, for OTA usage, not have any monthly fees to pay. It may cost more than the others, but many consider it worth it for the extra quality, features, reliability and support.

How much are you willing to spend? How big of a priority is it for you to have a built-in guide? Or would you be OK with manual-only timer setting?

Thanks for feedback. I didnt realize that Tivo offers a no fee option. Looking at other forums for the channel master and ePVision solution sounds like a solution that is not as elegant as the Tivo.

If you cant tell we are considering cutting the cord but still want to be able to record our network TV shows, hence the DVR soltuion. How well does the tivo record just OTA (no cable)? Does it work like the DVR for cable? Just point and click?

Can you attach external hard drives to increase the storage space on the device? If not, how can storage be increased?

I upgraded my older Tivo HD to 1TB which is ~160hrs of HD, it was quite easy. I think the newer Premiers allow a larger internal drive. If you can afford it the Tivo is the best solution for point and click recording, both for and cable. If your OK with a more limited guide or simple VCR type programming then something cheaper might work for you.

If you're looking at a new TiVo, you need to stick with a Premier or Premier XL. The TiVo Elite model does not have and OTA tuner. There are older models that you can by used on ebay, complete with "Lifetime" guide service.

Refurb tivo premiere on woot today. $50 for the basic 45 hr premiere or $175 for the 150 hr Xl. both will do OTA. $50 + $400 for service is a great deal.

Yes, it has an ESATA port for attaching a WD DVR Expander. In addition, you can network it and transfer recordings back and forth between your PC for "unlimited" storage or archiving if so desired.

According to website the XL does not have OTA just the regular primiere. Is this correct?

Opps.. I guess the Primiere 4 is different than the XL. They dont have XL list on tivo site. Is this the same as The basic primiere, just with a bigger hard drive?

the 4 and the xl are ota and/or cable, both of these units have been discontinued. the premiere now being sold is the same as this woot one but with a bigger hard drive and the XL has been replaced 4XL which does not do OTA. this xl is the same as the 4 but with a bigger drive and THX certification, which means nothing.

if you need more than 45 hours of space for OTA, then get this XL, unless you want to get the regular premiere for $50, buy a new 1tb drive for about $100 and expand the storage. not worth the hassle in my opinion.

I have three XL's. They definitely do OTA.

The XL is the same as the regular Premier, except larger hard drive and illuminated remote. The XL has recently been discontinued by TiVo as a unique model, but I believe it is still available in the retail channels.

Yes, if you connect it to the internet. I checked Amazon, and the XL is in stock, $203 with free shipping.
