I am looking for standalone HD DVR. I recently stumbled upon Pixelmagic HDD recorder model MTV7000D-MINI. It looks like exactly what I need with one thing though. According to operation manual for non-MINI model (MTV7000D) available on manufacturer website, it looks like the recorder is unable to record in progressive formats 720p and 1080p when using external HDMI inputs. Interlaced 480i or 1080i are supported only. The manual for MINI is not available though and I wonder if this version brings progressive recording. I emailed PixelMagic but no response so far.

Anyone had a chance to play with this recorder? Cheers biggrin.gif

Just received response from PixelMedia:

"MTV-7000DMINI supports 720p and 1080i video from HDMI input"

It is great news because my cable STB outputs both, so recording in 720p - which I primarily use is possible.

Links and exact description to whatever this is would of been nice. You assume everyone knows what this is.

Sorry folks. I found this recorder mentioned by another AVS forum user in separate thread. It got my attention so much I started to dig deeper and finally get one for myself. This is fairly new product and there is not much information on the net yet including YouTube. But it is powerful device which does more than TiVo and most of all does not require monthly subscription. If you add slingbox capability on the top of it, it makes this particular model best high definition recorder & streamer in one on the market.

The model I am getting to try is latest MTV7000-MINI. More info here

http://www.magictv.com/hk/en/mtv7000d-mini.html

Will definitely share my experience once I have a chance to put my hands on it.

Wrong format anyway (DTMB)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DMB-T/H

But since South Korea is completing their digital change over in December and they use ATSC, possibly Samsung will introduce recorders for their home country.

My MagicTV box (MTV) arrived yesterday evening (amazing overnight DHL service). It is the size of my Motorola STB (QIP7000-2) so it fits nicely right underneath.

Connected MTV to my Samsung LCDTV through HDMI and set output to 1080p60 (default was 1080i50). Received brilliant crystal clear picture.
Connected my cable box to MTV with HDMI, set cable box output to 1080i (max supported for QIP7000-2). MTV accepts signal with no issue showing received program.
Connected my PS3 to 2nd HDMI input on MTV with HDMI, set PS3 output to 1080i, MTV accepts signal with no issue showing PS3 desktop.
Set recording mode for both sources to HG (HD High Quality, 1080i).
Tried timeshift function, works great.
Tried recording & playback, works great, from both connected sources.

For tonight, I plan to try its streaming capabilities (within LAN, WAN to PC or my Android tab & phone).
I am not expecting to get much from passing through my cable through MagicTV tuner but it is worth to try. I am curious whether it is able to pick up EPG. Will see. So far the box works as expected.

You are saying you can record normally encrypted channels off your STB, or are you just recording in the clear OTA channels?

As I expected this is pure hd recorder so it will record anything in hd that you feed into its inputs. Including stb, xbox, ps3, anything.

One exception is the tuner so using EPG might not work. You have to setup recording manually according to your program guide.

You said you have a PS3 connected via HDMI. Try putting a BluRay in the PS3 and seeing if it will record. If it does, you have a seriously illegal box that somehow made it through customs.

wink.gif
Ok. I really do not care if it does bd or not. Like I do not care about tuner or epg. All I care is to use it as buffer like TiVo without paying premiums or monthly fees. If someone thinks this is a waste if money? Fine, why should I care. Thanks.

Calm yourself down, tuck in your shirt and read between the lines.

What I am curious about, and what the BluRay experiment would show, is whether you managed to import a box with no HDCP compliance on the HDMI inputs. Many of us on several forums here, have known about the PixelMagic products from HK for quite some time, but to my knowledge you are the first person on AVS from the US to actually have been able to procure one. Some other people have tried and the manufacturer won't ship out of HK.

I did not mean to be rude, I apologize if I did. As everyone I am aware of all the mess around copyrights etc. Taking it as you named it, I guess I would have to scrap my old VCR, couple of tape decks (boy, I still have these) my old Sony HDD DVR recorder. I am not trying to say I try to bend the rules because I never do. I just think it is enough paying almost $150 a month for cable service. Without paying another $15 for someone to allow me to buffer TV program when I have to spend 10 minutes in a restroom... or have it streamed to my bedroom to watch recent episode to the end before I fall asleep without paying premium for 2nd stb. rolleyes.gif cheers.

Today I've configured and tested video streaming from MTV box to my Android phone and tablet within LAN as well as WAN. There is a dedicated app on Android market available which lets you connect to your MTV and watch current source or browse and watch recordings you've made in the past.
Works really well. App allows to set streaming quality up to 5Mbps which is the max I use at home WiFi giving me stunning picture much better comparing to my SD Slingbox Solo. On the go, 1250Mbps on my sgs2 gives me clear picture as well. One serious downside of streaming from 3rd party cable box is inability to control cable box channels through included IR emitter cable. For some reason manufacturer included only specific to local HK market stb's. So streaming truly make sense if you want to watch specific source or browse and watch recordings. Unless PixelMagic will correct this with new firmware. cool.gif

How does one set it to record at a specific time?

How about first we find out how to go about importing one of these into the US from a Hong Kong manufacturer who doesn't want to ship out of Hong Kong. Not everybody has a friend in HK who can mail you one.

This thread which has been going on for well over a year has more info on this product, including some nice pictures by esdwa.
Sad part about something like this is it's probably easier for someone in the US to get something like crack or a banned assault rifle than a product like this frown.gif

It's funny, because it was the other thread that I have found on AVS which pointed my attention to this product about which I had no idea it exists before. Great community of AVS, thank you!

There are so many merchants from HK who sell on ebay and amazon. I am positive many of those can help in getting anything customer wants.

After reading through the manual, I can only say;

1. How can the tuner assignment be changed to North American frequencies?
2. How can we get these easier? Even the 3000 series with no inputs.

This thing is a wet dream. Other than the tuners frequency assignment, the only other negative is no digital (optical and/or coaxial) inputs! It is what the Funai/Maggy DVR?DVD Recorder isn't. HD!
It is also what the ePVision will never be.mad.gif

There are so many well though out functions/features,. I would be hard pressed to find issues. How can these people have their act together and most of these others do not?
