My DISH VIP612 doesn't power on after a large thunderstorm passed through. I took it apart and plugged in the hard drive to drive caddy. The drive powers on and the disk spins fine. I called DISH Customer Service, they're sending a new receiver but it'll be a few days before I get it.

My question would be: If I swap the hard drive from the old receiver to the new one, would I be able to save all the previously recorded materials? Has anyone tried this yet? I'll know in a few days but don't want to get my wife's hopes up if it can't even be done.

Thanks!

Yes you can indeed swap drives and thereby rescue your recordings, but... You will have to break the seal on the drive cage to do so. This may or may not cause any heartburn at the Dish refurbishment facility.

Thanks, it definitely worked. No issues whatsoever. Didn't have to worry about the seal on either one since they both had the seal not sticking to the cage.
