Any one interested in being an early adopter?

"Tablo™ Makes it Easy for Consumers to Enjoy Free HDTV: Now Seeking Supporters and Early Adopters Through Indiegogo

OTTAWA, CANADA —November 8, 2013— Nuvyyo, a pioneer in revolutionizing the home media experience, today previewed a new product that offers cord-cutters a better way to access free Over-The-Air (OTA) high-definition TV content. The new product, called Tablo is the first solution designed to combine the functionality of a DVR with the convenience and mobility of a tablet-based app to browse, record and stream broadcast TV content to any device, anytime, anywhere. Additionally, Nuvyyo has launched an Indiegogo campaign for Tablo to engage TV-lovers and early technology adopters as supporters and beta testers prior to the product’s retail availability in early 2014."

laridae 12-28-2013 05:56 AM

The Indiegogo campaign failed to raise their goal of $50,000 so they had to return the pledges.

This could be a great product if you're not in a big hurry. There is a demand for this.

I don't know what's going to happen to the 150 beta prototypes that were supposed to be released in January. Hopefully they will still be produced and they will keep moving forward with this.

laridae 01-07-2014 04:56 PM

Looks like Tablo is going ahead.

Currently taking pre-orders for units to ship in Feb for $220.

I'd like to try it out but would only be interested in 4 tuner version. Right now it appears only 2 tuner model available?

laridae 01-12-2014 09:28 AM

It says that there will be a 4-tuner model later;

"The Tablo 4 Tuner model will be available later in the spring with an anticipated retail price of $249.99"

snowcat 01-13-2014 11:01 AM

I decided to preorder one and see how it does. A 2-tuner model is fine for me, and I have a spare 1 GB external USB hard drive that I can use. I will let you all know when it comes in.

RTK 01-14-2014 09:07 AM

like any new product, I suspect it will take some time to iron out the bugs but for ditching cable it sounds like an ideal platform. I'm also curious to hear how it compares to SimpleTV

tmann05 01-15-2014 10:55 AM

Ok I have a question about this. If get the dual tuner model, run 1 coax to it from my OTA and connect to it from my 3 TV's with Roku boxes. Will I be able to watch live TV on all 3 TVs and change channels freely? Or would I need to get the 4 tuner model and run 4 coax to it for 4 TV's? Sorry Ive never played with DVR and tuners before.

I am just looking for a way to get TV in every room without replacing or running new coax to each room. This device seems to be that solution. I just don't want to not be able to change channels in each room. No point in getting it if the TV channel is the same in all rooms. If I have to run 4 coax lines to it I could. Just need to know what model i need. Be nice not to have to replace all the Coax in the house.

jagouar 01-15-2014 11:28 AM

Sounds very similar to simpletv.... not that I would be totally against this kind of system but seems like we already have a product that does everything this will but will be interested to see some comparisons between them.

laridae 01-16-2014 11:22 AM

Everyone will be interested to see how they compare once the Tablo is shipped next month.

So far there are very few people outside of Kanata or Las Vegas that have seen one so we'll all just have to wait a little longer till someone gets their hands on one and shares their observations with us.

From reading the FAQ on Tablo's site, if you wanted to watch TV on three different Rokus and watch a different channel on each one, then you would need the four tuner model. However, you can watch recordings on up to 6 devices at the same time, and it sounds like it could be 6 different recordings.

And no matter whether you have the two-tuner or the four-tuner model, you will need just one coax antenna connection.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

tmann05 01-16-2014 01:33 PM

Thanks a lot! I will read up on the FAQ more, it sounds like the 4 tuner will work best for me.

snowcat 01-24-2014 08:05 AM

Tablo has made some blog updates. The most informative one is this: http://www.tablotv.com/blog/back-away-from-that-flash-drive

They say that the most successful hard drives tested so far are from Segate, especially the Backup Plus line, and the WD Elements drives.

Make sure you don't use a flash drive, NAS drive, or any external drive greater than 2 GB.

TabloTV on Facebook is a good place to ask questions. I also emailed them directly a couple of weeks ago, and I received a response the same day.

The plan right now is to start shipping in mid to late February. The developers are still working on the Roku channel (which I would think is really important). The Chromecast SDK was released a few days ago, so the Tablo team is also working on getting the device to work with it. If it isn't ready by the time the device ships, it shouldn't be much longer after that.

The one question that they answered for me was that while you need an iPad or Android tablet to do the initial setup, you can then use the Roku remote control to browse, record, and play live tv and recordings.

I am pretty excited about this device.

+1

This looks perfect for how I want to set things up when I cut the cable cord. Roku 1 @ea TV and either this or SimpleTV DVR would seem to be ideal. Thou I would need the 4 tuner version.

I had planned to go with Tivo Romeo w/Minis setup but this looks cheaper.

snowcat 02-20-2014 10:46 AM

I just got an email today from TabloTV saying that they are still working on a few things and that shipping will be delayed till early March. The initial plan was to ship by the end of February.

One of the really cool features about this device is that it acts like a Slingbox. So when I am on vacation in another state and want to watch a Titans game, I don't have to worry whether it is shown locally or not. I can just watch it through my iPad or laptop.

laridae 02-20-2014 03:37 PM

Yes, I see they've updated their pre-order page as well;

"Tablo will ship in early March 2014."

Their website still refers to ChromeCast support but doesn't update when that might be available now that the API has been released;

"* Support for Chromecast will become available after the full Chromecast API has been released by Google"

qz3fwd 02-22-2014 06:05 PM

Looks like Simpe.TV 2 has its own share if issues, some of which seem uber obvious that I am astonished they released the product.

I saw the Simpe.TV 2 at microcenter today and almost purchased it, but resisted since I am waiting for the Tablo implementation.....4 tuners please.
Hope the Tablo releases a product ready for prime time and not missing basic functionality with "later" updates promised......

Luckily, the simple team seems to have rolled out downloads of recorded content, so that means the Tablo team really needs to provide this functionality in their product.
Keeping my fingers crossed.

On their facebook page, someone asked about Chromecast support on 2/16, and the response was "we should have a better handle on the ETA for Chromecast in the coming weeks." Also, it was asked on twitter today and the response was "The dev team is starting to look at it now". So I doubt it will be available when it is shipped, but hopefully it will be ready by the end of March (and no later than the end of April).

Also on twitter, the dev team said that closed captioning will not be available on release, but it is on their roadmap. So if you need that feature, I would wait till it is implemented.

Mattman13 02-24-2014 08:18 AM

I am VERY interested in Tablo as it appears to be the only OTA DVR solution that will make me consider cutting the cord when my 2 year contract with Verizon is up.  That being said I am getting a sinking feeling that this product is being over promised and under delivered.   I hope that Tablo is delivered with the promised features soon.

Is anyone on AVS participating in the beta?

Here are a few more notes gathered from twitter and facebook.

The two-tuner model will be shipping the "middle of March". The devices will be shipped from New York for American customers. I was looking at my bill again, and the shipping cost is $12 (but no taxes),

There is a one-year warranty on the device. However, there is no real tech support phone number (though you can call them in Canada if you pay for it). It is best to contact them through email, facebook, or twitter.

There are no plans to sell this in stores, so you have to go to their website to order.

They will be filming and presenting a Roku demo either this week or next week.

Questions123 03-06-2014 07:49 AM

Any word on the 4-tuner model, besides "Spring 2014"?

I'm very interested in the Tablo, but there are a few things I'm going to wait to get ironed out first -- mainly chromecast functionality and surround sound.

Tablo had a facebook post yesterday saying the 4-tuner model will be out "later this spring". So really nothing new. The main disadvantage of the 4-tuner model is that Tablo won't have their special promotion of 1 year free guide data like they are doing for the 2-tuner preorder. On the other hand, by the time it is released, the software should be a lot more mature.

I am hoping it gets shipped next week, but it wouldn't surprise me to see it the week after that.

Questions123 03-06-2014 10:50 AM

Thanks.

The free one year guide data, while nice, is a little pointless to people who intend to get the lifetime guide data. $150 for life, or $150 for life+1 year wink.gif

RafaelSmith 03-07-2014 11:23 AM

Finally got my OTA Antenna setup so I am ready to cut the cord......just need to decide on a DVR solution. This Tablo is really looking interesting......especially since I already have Roku boxes on the TVs. Hopefully it delivers as promised and is available soon or I might have to settle for Tivo solution.

qz3fwd 03-08-2014 12:17 PM

If they ever actually release the damn thing.
So far it is vaporware with a sliding window release date sometime in the future....

snowcat 03-10-2014 11:00 AM

It's been an informative weekend and Monday on the Tablo front on their Facebook page.

1. The four tuner model is now expected to ship in late April.

2. Tablo released a video showing how their Roku interface works. It looks very Netflix-like with their menus. I do have a concern though after watching it.
To watch live tv, there is a live tv icon. Clicking it brings up the list of channels. You then select a channel, it calls the Tablo to load it, and then it starts playing. My concern is that to go to another channel, I will have to go back to the channel menu to select and load another one. It's not going to be the same as having an OTA antenna (or cable/satellite) where you just switch channels immediately. (It might be easier to just use a tablet to control the tuners)

If you do want to search for shows to record or playback, it does have a nice image-oriented menu so that the shows should be easy to find. Also, the Roku app does support pausing, rewind/FF, and 3-sec skip.

3. Guide data is downloaded once daily.

4. Chromecast support may be ready at launch, and if not, shortly after.

I am hoping the 2-tuner will ship this week, but nothing is final yet. They are testing 2 more features.

laridae 03-10-2014 03:56 PM

Yes, thanks for that update Snowcat.

It won't be long now!

And I see they have a Twitter feed right on their homepage!

snowcat 03-11-2014 11:36 AM

I just received an email from them today. They are testing the out-of-streaming feature and making a final tweak to the hardware. Unfortunately, that means that it will now ship in late March.

It's a bit disappointing, and I will have to do another month of DirecTv, but it does look like it is very close.
