Question? As some of you know Susan and I ditched the cable some months ago and are now OTA. Excellent HD reception and no monthly bill. Denon 2808 through HDMI runs the surround.

However our work schedule many times keeps us from watching the few shows we like, so we decided to give each other for X-Mas a HDPVR. Does any one know of a good one in the 300.00 range? Not TIVO as they have their monthly charge and I hate to have to BUY a piece of equipment then pay someone every month so I can use it!

There are two holes in Daddys head where all the money goes.

That seems like a very reasonable question on the face of it, but the sad truth is that, for a variety of reasons there are no brand-name OTA PVR's available in N. America. The pickings are pretty slim but there is a very good summary of your choices available here;

Also, you may want to read through some of the other threads on this forum to familiarize yourself with some of the technology, issues and choices. It's not a simple matter. Are you looking for a new little hobby!?

For a slightly higher price, you can buy a Tivo with lifetime service and not have to pay the monthly charge. That puts your ROI out a bit more, but still a reasonable solution.

I think the OP was pretty clear he doesn't want a TiVo.

The OTA signal is free. Some people, maybe even most people, cutting the cable don't want to pay anything extra just on principal.

Channel Master is coming out with the DVR+ next month. No guide cost but entry is higher than $300. Another alternative is to buy/build a HTPC with a TV tuner. Again more than $300 but you get a lot of capabilities.

Sony KDL-42V4100 LCD TV, Yamaha RX-V665 AV receiver, Sony PS3 slim, Klipsch F-30 speaker system

It doesn't necessarily have to be expensive. I got an old PC for $50 and used tuner for $100 from ebay, and I was in business. Works beautifully. Heck, you could just plug a tuner into the PC you already have and possibly use an Xbox you already have for playback and live TV.

But for OTA, a $40 iView or Homeworx should work fine. No need to spend anywhere near $300.

It was clear he didn't like the monthly charge, but I guess he can make that decision for himself.

That CM has been "coming out" since it was first announced last July!

And now it's just been delayed again to sometime in Q1 2014.

We really need it and I hope it comes through but with all these delays I'm getting concerned that it's just another example of "vapour ware"
