There was not a single hiccup or stutter the whole way thru. This looks very very promising! So we're not dealing with "smoke and mirrors" here, there is a very real product out there, I just hope we see it sooner rather than later.

At this time, the copy flag is set by the cable company for the firewire ports on their STBs.

And many MSO's have it set to copy freely as they roll out the IEEE 1394. I know of many MSOs getting ready to crack down on it and change it to copy once during the month of June :(

Many people recording then might find a nasty surprise, so I hope this product is real and not a veiled attempt to get 169time moving.

It can't be component in, because it won't work on the HD-Tivo. Since the DTC-100 is mentioned, it would have to be some sort of "mod", being that there is no digital HD Out from the DTC-100, right?

FYI

The developer should contact 169time and consider a joint marketing or some other advantageous business arrangement.

Now, is someone deleting posts? If so, is there something to hide?

Wow, its true, its true. Somehow everyone else can talk about any shilling of a product they want, but me, no, I am special now. What an honor.

Shall be interesting to see if this is real, whats it cost, does it work,
and is it legal. ;)

Basically it is just a matter of tapping in to the transport stream somewhere between the tuner and the MPEG decoder. Theoretically such a mod should be possible on just about any box (although I'm no electronic engineer).

The problem with Copy Once is that there's no way to backup the material.

I think most of us acknowledge that DVHS is just a stop-gap until something better (HD-DVD, Blu-Ray, etc) comes along. Once that happens, we won't be able to transfer our tapes over.

1) it's not necessarily transport stream that goes from the decryption stage to the decoder

2) it's possible that this link in the chain is inside a chip, making tapping it almost impossible.

Earlier someone brought something to my attention that could just be coincidental, but the more I look at it the more I doubt it. I wonder if the product that alan is talking about is the skyseeker.

http://www.skyseeker.tv/

I believe the release on these is also in the august time frame. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Nothing - providing you want to store on DVHS instead of Hard Drive and can get a nice clean start & end while taping on the fly.

If you want to clean it up post, then you are screwed.

And forget about moving it to DVD-HD when available.

This sums up the convenience of recording to hard drive before 5C. Further, you can fast forward and rewind ("to be kind") instantly.

I just record to tape and view later. No clean up necessary.

The Skyseeker OASIS won't let you watch DIRECTV, and the Supra has no mention of 8PSK, so I tend to believe that these are not what Alan is talking about. Plus I already said what it must obviously be.

A little birdy told me it is a 3rd organization - separate from 169time and Skyseeker.

I still don't know how their product works, other than it is a modification
to the STBs that Alan mentions in his updated note.

"...will initially support dish 6000 and direcTV DTC100/E86/HD-5. There are no plans to support the 811/ HDtivo/Voom at this time. Availablity is tenativly scheduled for the end of August..."

Also, what is the minimum PC processor speed for this device and can the device co-exist in the same box that has undergone a 169time mod?

It doesn't sound like any modification to the receiver is required, although I could be wrong.

If this is targeted at the 5000/mod users, I can't believe 811 receiver is not the targeted mod, afterall many of us traded in our 5000/mod for a new 811 box.

Just from the little info we've received, there must be some kind of modification to the receiver. Think about it, why does this new product only work with certain receivers? Or if I'm wrong about modification, here's a better question. What is the difference between the receivers listed to work with this new product and every other DBS HD receiver out there?

There has to be some connection.

Currently testing 3D with Sammy DLP, shutter glasses, and HTPC

What I don't understand is Allan said this is not a firewire based solution yet all the playback devices he mentioned share one thing in common, firewire. Even if firewire is only used for playback, can you claim the system is not firewire based?
