I didn't see that firewire was needed to playback the recording. Alan is making recordings with this new device and can play it back glitch free with a JVC HM-DH3000U, MyHD, LG HD PVR, and JVC HM-DH40000U so the recordings are made on a PC and transfered via firewire to three of those devices. I still don't know how the recordings are made since it isn't by using firewire but so far it sounds like it will be the current winner for archiving HDTV when introduced. What is the input source for the recording?

Don't overlook the good old parallel port. Every PC still has one and it can suck in the MPEG transport stream at ease. Such a modification to the receiver would be minimal, you just tap (and hopefully buffer) the 8bit stream and clock.

Such a mod would be higly reliable and low cost.

Semi-stupid question.

I've never bought a modified receiver before. Do you generally have to have the receiver that is being modified, or does the modifier ever buy a bunch and then sell them as a unit?

Trying to figure out how to get hold of an out of date receiver if these become short supply on ebay after the announcement.

As far as I know the only receiver modification for recording HDTV is the 169time mod. You can buy a modified receiver or send your receiver in to be modified. So yes apparently he bought a bunch of receivers to modify. I am tempted to buy one of the receivers that will work now and be ready since this sounds so good. It isn't clear yet that the receiver has to be modified but it sounds like that must be the case. I can't imagine it is possible with component, DVI or VGA output so a parallel port modification might be the answer.
